Margaret St. Clair

Both of Margaret St. Clair's parents were born in Ireland. Their date of immigration is unknown but they are said to have reached Butler Co. PA by 1796, which is approximately the year of Margaret's birth. Because of the imprecision of dates, we don't know if Margaret was born in Ireland, eastern U.S., or in Butler Co. PA.
Both Archibald St. Clair and Margaret's future father-in-law James Hogue participated in a lottery for land in western Center Twp. The St. Clairs settled on a farm just east of Unionville by 1803, when Margaret would have been about 6 years old. Archibald ran a distillery in addition to farming. The 1858 map of Butler Co. shows the land of "St. Clair heirs" to lie southwest of Unionville, between present-day Unionville Rd. and McCandless Rd. Margaret grew up on the farm in Center Twp., but after her marriage to James Irvin Hogue, resided in Slippery Rock Twp. The Hogues apparently moved there in 1798. James I. Hogue was a surveyor in addition to farming. He laid out the plat for the village of West Liberty and owned a farm nearby. The couple had nine children, the first son named for Margaret's father, the first daughter for James' mother, Mary Irvin. When Slippery Rock Twp. was subdivided in 1854, the Hogue's property was in the newly created Brady Twp. James Irvin Hogue died between 1870 and 1880; Margaret subsequently lived next to her grandson Isaac C. Wimer's relatives. She was age 84 in 1880. Her date of death and place of burial are not known to us.

They are listed as living with five children: daughter Martha Hoge, 22; son Thomas Hoge, 20; daughter Elizabeth Hoge, 17; daughter Sarah Hoge, 11; and son John I.(or J.) Hoge, 9. James and Thomas are listed as farmers. Everyone was born in PA. Sarah and John are listed as having attended school in the census year. The next family listed on this census page is that of James and Margaret's eldest son, Archibald Hogue, 32, suggesting that they lived on adjacent property. This census is dated August 9, 1850.

They are listed as living with two children: son John I.(or J.) Hoge, 20; and possibly a grandaughter Cardalia Hoge, 4. James I. Hoge is a farmer. Everyone was born in PA. The preceeding family on this page is that of James I. Hoge's son, Archibald Hoge, suggesting that they were neighbors. Two houses down is the entry for the family containing Richard Hines, Jr. and Elizabeth Brandon. This census is dated 8 Jun 1860.

• Relationships in the 1880 census. This extremely interesting census illustrates the extended-family reliance necessary to care for the aged and disabled in those days. George Gibson's wife, Mary E. Hines, is a sibling of George Hines & Eli Hines, enumerated here, and of Eleanor Jane Hines who is not enumerated here. Eleanor Jane Hines' two daughters, Elizrah Robison and Ida Robison, are however listed here. Note that these two Robison daughters are also enumerated in 1880 in their parents' home; see James Robison, Jr. or Eleanor Jane Hines. Apparently they served the Gibson home on occasion.

  The relationship of Margaret St. Clair Hoge to this family is as follows. She and James Irvin Hogue were parents of Elizabeth Hogue who married Samuel Wimer, Jr.. Grandson Isaac C. Wimer married Margaret Jane Robinson, a daughter of James Robison, Jr. & Eleanor Jane Hines. Eleanor Jane Hines was sister-in-law of George Gibson.
  
  Finally the relationship, if any, of Mchel Gibson (he & family b. Scotland) and George Gibson (he & family b. Ireland)is unspecified. Because of the difference in country of origin, but similarity in ages, the relationship of cousins suggests itself. Western PA is full of Scots Irish who settled in Ireland (some briefly, some for generations) before immigrating to America.

• Since Mary S. Kelly was the daughter of Rebecca Wimer, and the granddaughter of Mary Sophia Snyder, it is likely that her middle name was Sophia.
• The 1883 History of Butler County PA, published in 1883, says that "Mrs Hoag is the only survivor". It isn't known when the interview for the history was done, but likely sometime shortly before 1883.
