Pg. 58 re. Middlesex Twp, Taxables of 1803
Archibald St. Clair (distillery)...400 acres; 1 cow, 3 horses or oxen;valuation $512; tax $1.54
Pg. 581 re. Centre Twp Pioneers.
The original settlers of Centre Twp. came there in 1796. Archibald St. Clair participated in the lottery for 400 acre tracts of land in 1796; also James Hoge, with 150 acres.
Pg. 582 re. Centre Twp:
"Archibald St. Clair established a distillery early in this century....Archibald St. Clair...and fully ninety percent of the sixty men, who made their homes here in 1796, were natives of Ireland, unpolished diamonds, strong in body and in mind, who opened the way to teeming prosperity."
Pg. 587, re. Centre Township Pioneers.
"In 1796 a branch of the Centre (township) colony drew lots for the cabins built west of the line.. This plan worked admirably, and within the year the following named tract owners were actual residents: ... James Hoge, 150 acres; George McCandless, 400; James McCandless, 400; John McCandless, 400; Robert McCandless, no land taxed; ...Archibald St. Clair, 400; ...The men named located in this township, while (others) who formed part of the company of sixty colonists, located in what is now Franklin township. ...

10 1880 United States Federal Census, Brady Township, Butler County, PA, Enumeration district 30. Date of census 10 June 1880.
Page 5, lines 17-23, family 38:
  • George Gibson, white male, age 35, married, farmer, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland
  • Mary E. Gibson, white female, age 35,wife, married, keeping house, b. PA, parents b. PA
  • George Hines, white male age 54, brother-in-law, single, b. PA, father b. Ireland, mother b. PA; George is marked as maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled.
  • Eli Hines, white male age 50, brother-in-law, single, works on farm, b. PA, father b. Ireland, mother b. PA.
  • Elzirah Robison, white female age 18, (no relationship listed),single, domestic servant, in school, all b. PA
  • Idie Robison, white female age 10 (no relationship listed), single, servant, in school, all b. PA
  • Mchel (sic) Gibson, white male age 30, single, (no relationship listed), works on farm, all b. Scotland
    Lines 24-25, family 39:
  • Margaret Hoge, white female age 84, mother-in-law, widow, b. PA, parents b. Ireland
  • Margaret Douglas, white female age 22, granddaughter, single, all b. PA

The presentation implies that these two families are related and living in adjacent housing. For the second household, the "granddaughter" relationship is that of Margaret Douglas to Margaret Hoge, but "mother-in-law" is apparently an attempt to characterize Margaret Hoge's relationship to George Gibson. She is in fact grandmother to the children of George Gibson's wife's sister (Eleanor Jane Hines Robison).

Note: Indiana Co. PA is two counties east of Butler, but the age is in the correct range for Archibald Jr. If this is a correct match, then Archibald St. Clair (this page) was still in Ireland in 1794.

Source notes

  • The 1820 census places Archibald St. Clair's birth date before 1776; the 1830 census places it between 1770-1780; the 1840 census places it between 1760-1770. These could only be accurate, depending on census dates, if he were born in 1770.
  • The 1830 census provides a 10-year range (1790-1800) for the birth date of Archibald's son Robert St. Clair. The birthplace of Robert St. Clair is listed as PA by his son Robert, Jr. in the 1880 census. Archibald St. Clair arrived in Center Twp., Butler Co. PA in 1796, so if son Robert were born after that date, then we assume Center Twp. as the place. Archibald St. Clair's whereabouts in America (or how long he was in the country) prior to 1796 are unknown. If son robert St. Clair were born between 1790 & 1796, then possibly in eastern PA; or possibly the PA citation in 1880 is faulty knowledge/memory on Robert, Jr.'s part. In any case, if Robert St. Clair, Sr. had been born in Ireland, Robert St. Clair, Jr. would surely have known that. We can assume an American birthplace, probably PA, for Robert St. Clair, and thus an immigration date for Archibald St. Clair of by at least 1790.
  • Will of Archibald St. Clair: names Archibald Hoge, who is St. Clair's grandson through his daughter Margaret St. Clair and James Irvin Hogue.
  • Birth order of the sons and daughters are presented as in the 1883 History of Butler Co. The birth date ranges are calculated from census (1820-1840). If the birth order is incorrect, then the birth date range will be incorrect also. The 1850 census for Archibald St. Clair, b. 1794 in Ireland, if represents a son of Archibald St. Clair (of this page), then the birth order is indeed incorrect.
