Gravestones of Richard Hines Jr. are on the western edge of the cemetery. A military stone notes his participation in the War of 1812. A second stone spells his name as "Hinds". His family's plot lies closer to that of Richard Hines Sr. The family plot has the stone of his wife Elizabeth at center. To the left of Elizabeth's stone is a stone for son George H. Hines. A broken stone for son Thomas Hines leans against that of Elizabeth, its base being to the right of hers. To the far right is a stone for 3 yr old son Isaiah.

Page 5, lines 17-23, family 38:

  • Elzirah Robison, white female age 18, (no relationship listed),single, domestic servant, in school, all b. PA

  • Mchel (sic) Gibson, white male age 30, single, (no relationship listed), works on farm, all b. Scotland
    Lines 24-25, family 39:
  • Margaret Hoge, white female age 84, mother-in-law, widow, b. PA, parents b. Ireland
  • Margaret Douglas, white female age 22, granddaughter, single, all b. PA

The presentation implies that these two families are related and living in adjacent housing. For the second household, the "granddaughter" relationship is that of Margaret Douglas to Margaret Hoge, but "mother-in-law" is apparently an attempt to characterize Margaret Hoge's relationship to George Gibson. She is in fact grandmother to the children of George Gibson's wife's sister (Eleanor Jane Hines Robison). Please see "Source Notes" below.

Source notes

  • 20th Century History of Butler & Butler County PA by McKee, pg. 861 re. George W. Hines makes a generational error: George W. Hines was a great-grandson of Richard Hines & Elizabeth Brandon. He was a grandson of Richard Hines, Jr. This calls into question which Richard Hines (Sr. or Jr.) is referred to as the veteran of the Revolutionary War. We know however that Richard Hines, Jr. served in the War of 1812. His gravestone makes no mention of the Revolutionary War. Presumably the Revolutionary War reference is meant to be Richard Sr., husband of Elizabeth Brandon.
  • Relationships in the 1880 census. This extremely interesting census illustrates the extended-family reliance necessary to care for the aged and disabled. George Gibson's wife, Mary E. Hines, is a sibling of George Hines & Eli Hines, enumerated here, and of Eleanor Jane Hines who is not enumerated here. Eleanor Jane Hines' two daughters, Elizrah Robison and Ida Robison, are however listed here. Note that these two Robison daughters are also enumerated in 1880 in their parents' home; see James Robison, Jr. or Eleanor Jane Hines. Apparently they served the Gibson home on occasion.

The relationship of Margaret St. Clair Hoge to this family is as follows. She and James Irvin Hogue were parents of Elizabeth Hogue who married Samuel Wimer, Jr.. Grandson Isaac C. Wimer married Margaret Jane Robinson, a daughter of James Robison, Jr. & Eleanor Jane Hines. Eleanor Jane Hines was sister-in-law of George Gibson.

Finally the relationship, if any, of Mchel Gibson (he & family b. Scotland) and George Gibson (he & family b. Ireland)is unspecified. Because of the difference in country of origin, but similarity in ages, the relationship of cousins suggests itself. Western PA is full of Scots Irish who settled in Ireland (some briefly, some for generations) before immigrating to America.
