NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR John Elliott Stoughton is not in my direct ancestry. He is two steps removed in the following ways: Nephew of Andrew Stoughton Grandson of John Stoughton and Catherine Covert

John Elliott Stoughton was born in 1837, the first child of parents Barnard V. Stoughton and 1st wife Susan Harvey. The parents are believed to have lived in Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co. PA at that time. John's mother died between 1846 & 1848, possibly in 1846 at the birth of her 6th child. John would have been 9 years old that year. The infant sister was sent to Illinois to be raised by an aunt. John's family moved to Callensburg in Clarion Co. and his father remarried.
At age 21 John married Mahala unknown, and worked at the blacksmith trade. John served as a farrier in the Civil War. His brother Joseph also served, and died in a Civil War prison camp.
John & Mahala lived in Armstrong Co. in 1860, then in Butler Co. in 1970 & 1980. By 1900 John & Mahala had moved to Forest Co. PA. They had had 8 children, only 3 of whom were still living. Among those living were Bernard V. Stoughton, named for his grandfather, and Herbert Stoughton, who married in 1899 but died between 1908 - 1920. John died at the Oil City Hospital in 1908. Wife Mahala died in 1904.

James. M. Schoonmaker, of the 1st Maryland Cavalry, but a citizen of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was authorized by Secretary of War Stanton and Gov. Curtin to recruit a battalion of cavalry of five companies. Recruits came in so rapidly that on the 29th the authority was extended to the recruiting of a full regiment of twelve companies... Companies K and L were principally, and Company M entirely, composed of Armstrong men...The date of the muster out was August 24, 1865, and the companies returned in a body to Pittsburgh, where they disbanded... The 159th lost about eighty men killed and more than 200 wounded, besides many reported missing. Records of Company K include in the list of officers, Farrier (blacksmith) John E. Stoughton, forwarded to us by Jim Voltz. Regarding Joseph Stoughton's Civil War service: When they returned to Pittsburgh, Joseph was reported as missing. The battle of Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs, WV, happened around Aug 26, 1863, where Jennie S. Stoughton said her brother was captured. Joseph died in Andersonville prison, but I can't find him on any lists, and don't have a death date. However, I have the battle date, and according to Jennie's book on page 12, he survived 21 months in the prison. That would put his death around May, 1865

It places the battle of Greenbriar White Sulfur Springs WVA to have occurred on 20 Aug 1863. (This is the battle at which Joseph Stoughton was captured, according to his sister Jennie S. Stoughton, in her written memoir, "Memories". She says he was taken to Andersonville Prison, and on pg. 21 says he survived 21 months there. His death would then have been around May 1865. His name has not yet been found on any prison lists and his death date is unconfirmed.

Source notes

• John Elliott Stoughton apparently used his blacksmithing skills as a farrier in the Civil War. His absence for soldiering may explain the gap in his children's birth dates.
• John Elliott Stoughton named one son after his father Barnard VanZandt Stoughon. The son's name is signed as Bernard Vonzant Stoughton on his draft card. Whether this spelling was consistent throughout his life is not know. Spelling was still phonetic and variable in this era. We have used the spelling in the signature.
• Mahala Wise was the daughter of Henry & Mary Wise. Both Henry & Mary had parents born in Germany. Henry Wise appears in one document as William Wise., so possibly his full name was William Henry Wise? Mary Wise remarried with James R. Campbell who was a widower. Mary Wise died March, 1905, in Armstrong County, PA, with a will. (This note from A. Fixx, June 2013).
• The 1900 census for the Blanchard family lists daughter Eva at home with them in Mead Twp., Warren Co. PA; her husband Herbert is at home with his parents in Hickory Twp, Forest Co. These two townships are about 20 miles apart. He lists the length of marriage at 8 months, she says 9 months; she has possibly gone home to await the delivery of their first child with her mother's assistance.
• Eva May Blanchard Stoughton is buried in Barnes Cemetery, Barnes, Warren Co., PA in an unmarked grave within her Father's Plot. Information given by Minna Blanchard Lawrence in 1951, to us via A. Fixx in 2013 as follows:

• Eva May Blanchard, on the 1920 census, is living with her brother Reno D. Blanchard& his family in Mead, Warren Co., PA. She is listed as a housekeeper for a private family (more than likely her brothers family). She has not been found on the 1930 census. Eva and Herbert Stoughton had no children, & Eva apparently did not remarry. (This note from A. Fixx, June 2013).
• A page by page search of the Hickory Twp, Forest Co, PA census for 1910 gave no Stoughtons except for Bern V. and family. Ancestry index searches of PA for Stoughtons and generally for John E. Stoughton b. PA gave no results. Eva May Stoughton and Herbert Stoughton could not be found when searched for in all states in the 1910 and 1920 census. No Stoughtons born in the 1860's or 1870's in PA seemed to be good matches for the missing children of John Elliott Stoughton.

"I believe that when Jeannie Stoughton Osborn wrote her story, news was traveling back to her family that he had been captured, but no one knew for sure where he was. So more than likely the family was trying to "guess" what happened to him. I think it is a possibility that John Elliott Stoughton went to look for Joseph because John was reported missing from several of the muster rolls. In the attached Armstrong County PA 159th Regiment, you will see John E. Stoughton was an Officer and Joseph Stoughton was a Private."

Research Notes

• Mahala Wise, wife of John Elliott Stoughton, was born in 1841, per the 1860, 1870 & 1900 census (and her obit). Searching the 1850 census of Clarion, Venango & Armstrong Co.s for a Mahala, none age 9 were found, but a Mahala age 10 is found in each of the 3 counties including parents Henry & Polly Wise in Franklin Twp., Armstrong Co. Company K, 14th Regiment of PA Volunteers was recruited at McKeesport, Allegheny Co. It is possible that John Elliott Stoughton & family resided in Armstrong Co. until after his war service, and then moved to Butler Co. where they appear in the 1870 census. (Research by Jim Voltz.)
