Source notes
- John Elliott Stoughton named one son after his father Barnard VanZandt Stoughton. The son's name is signed as Bernard Vonzant Stoughton on his draft card, and this spelling appears to have been what he used. One of his sons was named Vonzant, "Von".
- Daughter Kathleen married George E. Wurster; her name is given as Mrs. Kathleen Wurster Jr. in her mother's obituary, so we assume George E. Wurster, Jr. The surname is changed to "Steer" with their son Eugene Steer. The change was probably his choice as the parents kept the name "Wurster".
- A page by page search of the Hickory Twp, Forest Co, PA census for 1910 gave no Stoughtons except for Bern V. and family. Ancestry index searches of PA for Stoughtons and generally for John E. Stoughton b. PA gave no results. Eva May Stoughton and Herbert Stoughton could not be found when searched for in all states in the 1910 and 1920 census. No Stoughtons born in the 1860's or 1870's in PA seemed to be good matches for the missing children of John Elliott Stoughton.
