JOHN ELLIOTT STOUGHTON

5-16-1837 -- 2-29-1908

John E. Stoughton, son of M/M. B.W. Stoughton, was born in Butler County, Pa. August 14, 1856(sic. Note: b.1837, m. 1856), he was married to Mahala Wise in Armstrong County. Enlisted September 9, 1862, in Company K, 14th Pa. Vol. Cav., and was honorably discharged May 31, 1865. Comrade Stoughton was a charter member of Eli Berlin Post, No.629, had filled the various offices in said Post and served as Commander two years. He died of heart failure at the Oil City Hospital. He leaves to mourn his death two sons, Herbert J. of Warren, Pa., and Bernard Vonzant of East Hickory, and one daughter, Mrs. Henry (Berdetta) Kemble of Oklahoma. Rev. W.E. Davis, pastor of the East Hickory M.E. Church, delivered an able discourse on the honor of our comrade at 2 p.m., March 3rd. The G.A.R. had charge of the services and laid him to rest according to their ritual service, and was ably assisted by the W.R.C., No. 32. Our comrade now lies beside the companion of his youth, who passed over about three years ago. Comrade Stoughton was a resident of East Hickory for more than thirty-five years and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends, all of whom tender their sympathy to the surviving family. Our Post charter and flag will be suitably draped for thirty days in kind remembrance of our departed comrade. He received a Civil War pension.
