This site lists Catherine Covert as daughter of Lucas Covert & Cornelia VanZandt. However, it lists her husband as the John Walker Stoughton of Connecticut, rather than John Stoughton of New Jersey, as we believe to be the case.
This site follows descendants of Andrew Stoughton, son of John & Catherine Covert Stougthon. No additional information on other children of John & Catherin; some children's names confused (son John Stougthon is listed as John Bernard Stoughton; Barnard VanZant Stoughton listed as Barnard W.Stoughton).

Source Notes

  • The marriage site for Catherine Covert to John Stoughton is likely PA. Sources indicate her parents (see Lucas Covert) were in Northumberland Co. PA by 1790. Also this suggests that all children of this marriage were born in PA.
  • The 1840 census is speculation. The oldest female in the household is the correct age to be Catherine Covert, but it could also be Robert Logan's mother.
  • In 1850, Catherine Covert Stoughton, widow, apparently living next door to her son John Stoughton. Andrew Stoughton in the next dwelling may be a son of John's.
  • The Stoughton organizers of Muddy Creek Baptist church include a Catherine Stoughton. This could be Catherine Covert Stoughton, her sons Jacob and Andrew, and her brother in law Samuel (who later became a Baptist minister). More likely however is that the Catherine Stoughton mentioned is Catherine McCune Stoughton, wife of Samuel Stoughton.
  • A Covert family, Isaac and Nancy, is on the 1870 census for Brady Twp, Butler Co, pg 9 (see James Irvin Hogue). There is no known relationship at this time. EBW, 19 Aug 2007
  • Stoughton Family Genealogy and History research manuscript by Burke Stoughton, Apollo, PA, May-October 1996; G929.2 Butler Area Public Library, Butler, PA. This source erroneously lists the husband of Catherine Covert to be John Walker Stoughton (1767-1833), descended from a Jonathon Stoughton, Timothy Stoughton etc. family from E. Windsor, CT.
Notification by email Jan 2008 from the author, Burke Stoughton, indicates that the name John Walker Stoughton was erroneous, and that no connection to the Connecticut Stoughtons is presently known to us or documented. He continues to search for such a connection.
  • Sale of land from John Stoughton Estate (source 17): Catherine's husband John Stoughton (who died in 1833) left his land in the care of their son Jacob Stoughton (who died in 1841). When John Stoughton owned the land, it was part of Muddy Creek Township, and was located in First Donation District, Number 149. The land was to be kept for the care of Catherine Stoughton and not sold.

But when son Jacob Stoughton died (1841), there was so much debt that in 1849Jacob’s brother John Stoughton (who died in 1852) had to sell 20 acres of land to help pay off the debt. Also, note that this land was located in what was known as Worth Township in 1858 - the 100 acres was bounded by land of George Book, James Moore, Margaret Stoughton (Luke's wife), Thomas Cooper and John Stoughton This really helps us pinpoint where John Stoughton's land was located. Anyway - 20 acres was sold in 1849/1850, to help pay off debt.

Then in the other document set, John Stoughton(son of John & Catherine Stoughton) indicates he agreed to pay John Patterson for some loans after Mrs. Catherine Stoughton, his mother, died. The property was then to be sold and John Patterson was to be paid.

When the land was put up for sale on September 1, 1857, John Stoughton had died (in 1852) and James S. Stoughton was assisting with settling the estate. John Patterson was then paid.

Research Notes

  • Research re. burial site of John & Catherine Stoughton, with negative results: No gravestones found at various Butler County cemeteries visited in 2006-2007 by E. Wilson Williams (Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, Wolf Creek Cemetery, Muddy Creek Cemetery, Prospect's Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Prospect Presbyterian Cemetery or West Liberty Cemetery). No record found in the entire 5 volume set of the Cemetery Inventory of Butler County, searched by research staff of the Butler Area Public Library, Oct. 2007.
This suggests burial without gravestones, or that their stones deteriorated beyond legibility by the time of the Inventory; or burial at a small private cemetery not included in the Inventory.
