MAHALA WISE STOUGHTON

4-6-1841 -- 9-25-1904

Mahala, wife of John Elliott Stoughton, died at her home in East Hickory, Pa. on Sunday afternoon, after an illness of cancer, aged 63 years. She was born in Clarion County and was married to her now bereaved husband in Armstrong County, August 14, 1856. She was the mother of eight children, three of whom survive her; Mrs. Henry C. Kemble of Chelsea, Indiana Ter.; Herbert J. of Tiona and Bernard Vonzant of East Hickory. She is also survived by her mother, five brothers, and five sisters. She was a Christian - her life was known by its fruits, in deeds of kindness to all, and in her own home, where she trained her children by precept and example, she lived and sacrificed for her husband and children till her weary body refused longer to obey her will. She was a great sufferer for years and for the past three months seemed to linger just on the border-land. But her faith never waivered. She went into the valley undismayed, praising God all the while. Repeatedly she offered the most beautiful and fervent prayers, and had her favorite hymns sung just a short while before she passed away. Her body was laid to rest in the beautiful Riverside Cemetery at East Hickory, Pa. Mr. Stoughton and family desire to publicly acknowledge the many kind acts and words of sympathy spoken by neighbors and friends in this bereavement.
