This obituary for Herbert J. Stoughton was provided in an email by his grandson, R. Stoughton. It was transcribed from "History Of East Hickory Riverside Cemetery," Forest County Pennsylvania, by Lois Wike. Published by Forest Press Inc., Tionesta, PA.

Note that the birth year given in this document (1871) conflicts with that implied in the 1880 and 1900 censuses (1873). The fact that the age listed in the obituary is given as approximate and that there is no day or month given for birth that the 1871 figure is an estimate and is actually in error.

HERBERT J. STOUGHTON

1871 -- 8-17-1908

Herbert J. Stoughton, eldest son of Squire John Elliott and Mahala Wise Stoughton, of East Hickory, was instantly killed in a small wreck on the P.R.R. at Tidioute, Pa., shortly after 1 o'clock on Monday afternoon. Indications are that the unfortunate young man was stealing a ride and had hidden himself from observation by the crew on part of the steel frame-work of an oil tank car. The train of which this car was a part, was south-bound. The crew stopped at Tidioute to set in some cars on what is known as the Confer oil switch, and this particular car left the rails and "buckled." When the crew started to investigate the damage it had sustained, the dead body of Stoughton was found wedged between the end of the broken car and the rear of the car ahead of it. His head and upper portion of the body were squeezed almost flat. The body was turned over to Undertaker J.P. Sage, at Tidioute, and the coroner notified, but it was decided that no inquest would be necessary. The deceased was aged about 37 years, and besides his wife, who resides at Tiona, Pa., he is survived by on sister, Mrs. Henry C. (Berdetta) Kemble of Chelsea, Oklahoma, and one brother, Bernard Vonzant Stoughton of East Hickory. The body was brought to the home of the latter on Monday evening, and will be buried in the East Hickory Cemetery this Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He was a former East Hickory resident, but of late residing at Tiona, Warren County.
