John Stoughton (1805)
John Stoughton, Jr. was born after his parents reached Butler County in their migration westward from New Jersey. John lived his entire life in the county, except for his wartime experience in the War of 1812. He and wife Nancy Boyle resided on part of the homestead of his parents John Stoughton and Catherine Covert, and raised a family of six children. By 1850, when John was age 45, his real estate was valued at $1,000. He died two years later, barely 7 weeks after signing his will. His youngest daughter was born in March of 1852; John signed his will in mid-April and died early in July. This suggests an illness that forewarned his death.
His widow Nancy remarried by 1860 to farmer Jonathan Vogan of Slippery Rock Twp. Daughter Catherine, married to farmer Samuel R. Emory and residing in Perry Twp., Lawrence Co. PA, had two of Catherine's siblings living with them in 1860: her younger sister Martha who was 18 and still in school, and her brother William, 16, who worked as a farm hand. Three other children have not been located in the 1860 census: Thomas Jefferson Stoughton age 20, Euphamia age 14, and Hannah Minerva, age 10. The five children present in the Jonathan Vogan household appear to be those of Jonathan's earlier marriage.

14 | A. Fix correspondence 2010 -ongoing; see Contributors. Martha Jane Stoughton (06/14/1841 to 06/03/1864) married James Minteer of Worth Township. They had an infant boy (who died and is buried with Martha) and a daughter, Clara Ann Minteer who inherited part of her grandfather (John Stoughton's) property. The daughter inherited 1/6, which was to be Martha's share, but Martha died before the property was sold and the profit divided. Martha Jane Stoughton Minteer and the infant son are buried in Harlansburg cemetery, just a couple of plots from her parents. | |

Source notes
- Parents of John Stoughton (John Stoughton & Catherine Covert) apparently arrived in Butler Co. PA by 1803. They were in Middlesex Twp. by 1803 and Center Twp. by 1810. We presume from the dates that John was born (in 1805) in one of these two townships.
- Our initial listing of children included sons Thomas, and Jefferson. For now,per the research of Jim Voltz, these have been combined, on the following logic. The 1850 census has no mention of a son "Jefferson", and was only 2 years previous to John's death. The will of John Stoughton was not been seen by us, and may be abstracted incorrectly above (i.e. Thomas Jefferson may be one name). A complete will copy is on order (Aug 15 2008). Voltz cites the above military record for Thomas J. Stoughton, and notes that the only other Thomas Stoughton born about 1840 seems to be Thomas S. Stoughton, son of William and Mary (Wick) Stoughton.
- Sale of land from John Stoughton Estate (source 17): Catherine's husband John Stoughton (who died in 1833) left his land in the care of their son Jacob Stoughton (who died in 1841). When John Stoughton owned the land, it was part of Muddy Creek Township, and was located in First Donation District, Number 149. The land was to be kept for the care of Catherine Stoughton and not sold.
But when son Jacob Stoughton died (1841), there was so much debt that in 1849Jacob’s brother John Stoughton (who died in 1852) had to sell 20 acres of land to help pay off the debt.
Also, note that this land was located in what was known as Worth Township in 1858 - the 100 acres was bounded by land of George Book, James Moore, Margaret Stoughton (Luke's wife), Thomas Cooper and John Stoughton This really helps us pinpoint where John Stoughton's land was located.
Anyway - 20 acres was sold in 1849/1850, to help pay off debt.
Then in the other document set, John Stoughton(son of John & Catherine Stoughton) indicates he agreed to pay John Patterson for some loans after Mrs. Catherine Stoughton, his mother, died. The property was then to be sold and John Patterson was to be paid.
When the land was put up for sale on September 1, 1857, John Stoughton had died (in 1852) and James S. Stoughton was assisting with settling the estate. John Patterson was then paid.

R7 | Death certificate for Thomas J. Stoughton. He died in South Moniteau, Cooper Co., MO, on his 72nd birthday, 15 Nov 1911, of "Croupous Pneumonia." He had been in the hospital since 13 Oct 1911. There was an abscess in his lung for 15 days prior to his death. He was born on 15 Nov 1839 in Butler Co., PA. He was a farmer. His father's name was John Stoughton and was born in PA. Thomas died single. He was buried at Hickman Masonic Cemetery on 16 Nov 1911. The information on the form was provided by Thomas Stoughton of Collins ???, PA. |
The research of A. Fix indicates that Thomas Jefferson Stoughton, 1839-1911, was the son of John Stoughton and Nancy Boyle. Thomas Sylvester Stoughton is thought to be the son of William Stoughton and Mary Elizabeth Wick and thus Thomas Jefferson Stoughton's nephew. This last link is still under investigation by A. Fix.
