Family headed by W. Stoughton also on page. This appears to correspond to sons Luke, John & William under age 10, Jaocb & William G. age 10-15, daughter Eupahme under 10; William age 37 & Catherine age 32.
2	1820 United States Federal Census, Center Twp, Butler Co, PA Page 4. Census is not dated. Lists family headed by J. Stoughton: 2 males <10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25 1 male >45,, 1 female <10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female >45. This corresponds to John Stoughton age 53, wife Catherine Covert age 52. Children: 2 males under age 10 are Barnard age 3,& Luke, age ~13; 1 male age 10-15 is John age 15; 2 males age 16-25 are Andrew age 18,& Jacob age 20; 1 female <10 is Hannah age 5; 1 female age 10-15 is Effie age 10. (Son William age 23 not enumerated here; possibly working & living elsewhere; married in 1822).

Line 13: William Stoughton family with 1 male under age 5, possibly "Unknown son" born 1830-35; 1 male age 5-10 would be Andrew Jackson Stoughton; 1 male age 30-40 is the head of family, William; 1 female under 5 is Mary Elizabeth; 1 female age 5-10 is problematic, possibly Catherine; 1 female age 20-30 is Mary Elizabeth Wick Stoughton. Our William Stoughton born 1797 seems from our research to more closely fit this census than other presently known Williams. Also on this page are: Line 10 Family of Rev. Stoughton (age 40-50), Catherine (age 5-10), Mary E.(age 10-15), and wife Mary Elizabeth Wick(age 30-40). Andrew Stoughton is enumerated next door; he too has one unidentified child.

His brother Samuel Stoughton was a Baptist minister, and the entire family was strict in its religious observances. Children of John and Catherine Covert Stoughton were: William, a farmer,lived in Clay township; Luke, Andrew, Jacob (died unmarried), John, Barnard, Jane (married Thomas Boyle), Hannah (married John Patterson),Effie (married Robert Logan),Polly (died young).

Line 71-72: Thomas Stoughton born Aug 1838, age 61, married 6 yrs, day laborer, owns farm free of mortgage; Margaret, wife, born June 1851, age 48, married 6 yrs, no children born. Both can read, write & speak English; both born in PA, all parents born in PA.
17	Note by Will Stoton, written from the front, War of 1812. . "The note was not very long and only had about 10 or 15 lines on two sides of a small piece of paper. It was signed Will Stoton and it was addressed to _____Stoton, Butler County, PA. It opened with a short phrase praising God and then went on to say that he was as well as could be expected, as was Luke, and that he was not liking the south "because of the insects was so bad" and he mentioned the swamp. There was one passing mention of the British and the fact that a fight was imminent and he asked those at home to pray for them." This recollection by Burke Stoughton, who viewed the note. The note was not transcribed, and has disintegrated due to age.
18	War of 1812 Pension Application made by wife Mary Elizabeth Stoughton. See six images at right, supplied to us by A. Fix, Butler Co. PA, July 2012. Note that for the letter from J.S. Boyd and M. F. White in support of Stoughton's land claim (6th document at right, low visibility), A. Fix says the name George Means has been incorrectly transcribed as "George Stearns". George Means and William Stoughton served in the same Company. Per Means, William's father John Stoughton was drafted and William served in his place; however their application for land warrant was made in the name of John Stoughon.

• William Soughton's place of birth (1797)has been indicated to be New Jersey, but his father John Stoughton is said to have migrated from New Jersey sometime after 1795 to Lewisburg, Northampton Co. PA.
• Andrew Jackson Stoughton, known as A.J., was enumerated living next to his father William in 1860.

• We initially had this page titled "William G. Stoughton". The initial "G" now appears to have been in error; there is a different William G. Stoughton in Butler County. From Jeanne Eichelberger, April 2008: William G. Stoughton born 9-1827 wife Mary born 12-1829 are in 1870,1880 and 1900 census., with children: John 1851, Alfred 1853, Emma 1858, Lew 1864, Bell 1866 and William 1868. Further: Son John C. never married, lived with brother Alfred K. Stoughton who married Kathleen unknown & had a son George, age 19 in the 1900 census.
• See 1850 Deed, in which Wm (A./C./G.) Stoughton and John Wicks transfer land to 3 heirs of Luke Stoughton, the heirs being Wm. (A./G.) Stoughton, Mary Ann (Mcphersand?), and Luke C. Stoughton. See transcript 1850 deed

• From researcher Burke Stoughton on Apr. 2008: Burke interviewed Lewis Stoughton, whom he finds a reliable family source. Lewis's father, Harold Stoughton, told Lewis that William Stoughton's full name was William Andrew Stoughton.
• A question remains, as there exists a (poorly legible) copy of a land transaction wherein William G.(or C.) Stoughton transfers land to son John, and the text mentions a Luke Stoughton. If the relationship of Luke is stated, it is not legible on our copy. The names John and Luke match names of children of William Stoughton, this page.
