Lines 29, 30: Thomas Stoughton, 31, coal miner, b. PA; Nancy Ann, keeping house, b. PA. Nancy Ann Stoughton appears to be Thomas' wife, which would contradict the death record and 1910 census which suggest he never married.

R2 1900 United States Federal Census, District 72, Fairview Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 8. Census dated 5 June 1900.
Lines 71, 72: Thomas Stoughton, 61, b. Aug 1838, married 6 years, day laborer, owns farm, can read, write and speak English; Margaret, wife, 48, b. June 1851, married 6 years, no children, can read write and speak English. Both and all parents b. PA. This record's existence of a wife suggests that it is not the same Thomas J. Stoughton that appears in the death certificate and 1910 census, as that one is listed as never married in both documents.

R4 Gravestone for Thomas J. Stoughton, Company H, 78th PA Infantry, Civil War, at Saint Johns Reformed Church Cemetery,

Chicora, Butler Co., PA. This image was found on findagrave along with a writeup by Burke Stoughton written in 2009. A. Fix asserts that the writeup associated with this picture is for Thomas Sylvester Stoughton rather than Thomas Jefferson Stoughton. She indicates that Thomas S. was in Company B, 7th Regiment, 80th volunteers.

  • The research of A. Fix indicates that there is also a Thomas Sylvester Stoughton, thought to be the son of William Stoughton and Mary Elizabeth Wick and thus Thomas Jefferson Stoughton's nephew. This link is still under investigation by A. Fix.
