NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Nancy Boyle is not in my direct ancestry. She is the spouse of John Stoughton (1805), who is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Nancy Boyle and husband John Stoughton (1805) resided on part of the homestead of his parents, John Stoughton and Catherine Covert in Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co. PA, and raised a family of six children. By 1850, when John was age 45, his real estate was valued at $1,000. He died two years later, barely 7 weeks after signing his will. His youngest daughter was born in March of 1852; John signed his will in mid-April and died early in July. This suggests an illness that forewarned his death.
Nancy, now widowed, remarried by 1860 to farmer Jonathan Vogan of Slippery Rock Twp., Lawrence Co. PA. As Nancy inherited some number of step-children, her own older children moved out to stay with married siblings.
Nancy's daughter Catherine was married to farmer Samuel R. Emory and residing in Perry Twp., Lawrence Co. PA im 1860. Living with them were her younger sister Martha who was 18 and still in school, and her brother William, 16, who worked as a farm hand. (Three other children of Nancy & John Stoughton have not been located is 1860: Thomas Jefferson Stoughton age 20, Euphamia age 14, and Hannah Minerva, age 10.)
The five children present in the home of Nancy and Jonathan Vogan in 1860 appear to have been those of Jonathan's earlier marriage to Julia unknown. His older children had apparently also moved out to other homes. The youngest child, Jesse, was born in 1852, and as John Stoughton died in July of 1852, it is presumed that Jesse was a child of Jonathan & Julia unknown Vogan. Julia may possibly have died at Jesse's birth.

Source notes

  • Our initial listing of children included sons Thomas, and Jefferson. For now,per the research of Jim Voltz, these have been combined, on the following logic. The 1850 census has no mention of a son "Jefferson", and was only 2 years previous to John's death. The will of John Stoughton was not been seen by us, and may be abstracted incorrectly above (i.e. Thomas Jefferson may be one name). A complete will copy is on order (Aug 15 2008). Voltz cites the above military record for Thomas J. Stoughton, and notes that the only other Thomas Stoughton born about 1840 seems to be Thomas S. Stoughton, son of William and Mary (Wick) Stoughton.
  • In the 1850 census, Jon Vogan household, there appear Catherine age 5 and Sarah age 1. Ten years later the ages for Estellla age 15 and Rebecca age 11 suggest to us two daughters named Catherine Estella b. 1845 and Sarah Rebecca b. 1849.

Conjecture

Research

The following census suggest that Thomas/Thomas J. Stoughton, born about 1840, married first Nancy Ann unknown by 1870, then Margaret unknown by 1900, residing in Butler Co. PA. By 1910 he is found in Cooper Co. Missouri, apparently a widower (enumerated as "single").
