  • Among the identifiable names in the Ltrs. of Admin. of Joseph St. Clair are his father Archibald; his brothers John, Robert and Archibald Jr.; John McDavitt, husband of his sister Jane St. Clair; Samuel, J. W., and James Thompson (sister Mary St. Clair married a Thompson). It appears that Joseph died relatively young (age 22-32 yrs) with minor children; Thomas Brandon was appointed guardian. Thomas Branand was his brother-in-law, brother of his widow, Susannah Brannand St. Clair.

Conjecture

  • In the Letters of Administration of Joseph St. Clair, the script appears in places to say "Archibald St. Clair, son". This would seem to indicate that Joseph St. Clair was the father of Archibald St. Clair. However, the circumstances of appointing a guardian (presumably for young children), and the coincidence of the widow's name being Susanna, all point to the deceased being Joseph the son of Archibald St. Clair. It is possible that the script read as "son" is actually "sen", designating Archibald Sr. Or, "son" may be the equivalent of "Jr.", and refer to Archibald, son of Archibald St. Clair. Or, it may indicate that Joseph, son of Archibald, had a son named Archibald.
