NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Thomas Branand is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Thomas Branand or Brannon was born in Westmoreland County, PA to parents William Brannan, an Englishman, and Susannah Hines. The family moved to Worth Twp., Butler County when he was 18 years old. There he married Marry Burrows, who apparently died soon thereafter. He second married Mary Ann Reed whose family was from Lawrence County, and their first child was probably born by the early 1820's. By 1845 they had 10 children, and the family purchased a farm in Franklin Township. They were members of the United Presbyterian Church at Prospect. Mr. Branand was a Democrat, and apparently served in a variety of local political offices. In about 1865-70, when the Branands would have been about 70 years old, they provided a home for 12 year old Oliver W. Stoughton, whose father Matthew Stoughton had died when the boy was but a few years old. Oliver had lived with a grandfather and other relatives since, but seemed to find a tru affection for Mr. Branand, focused on his schoolwork, learned the plastering trade, and felt a bond of gratitude to Mr. Branand thereafter. Thomas Brannand died at about the age of 75 years, and is buried at Wolf Creek Cemetery as were his parents.

14 "Fire Destroys Barn" Butler Eagle 18 Oct 1930 issue, .
"Cause of the fire which destroyed a barn at the Howard Brannan farm in Franklin Twp., 11 miles north of Butler, on Thursday, was still undetermined today. The fire had gained such headway when discovered by Brannan that nothing could be done to save the structure. Brannan's store of grain went up in smoke and the barn was leveled, causing a loss estimated at $5,000, partly covered by insurance. Horses and swine in the barn were removed before flames closed approaches to the building."
According to "20th Century History of Butler Co., 1909" by McKee - the barn was built by Isaac Brannan, Howard's father. It probably replaced a much older structure.
Per Patricia Moser, whose mother was 7 at the time of the fire, there was not enough insurance to cover rebuilding, and as it was the Depression, the family could not rebuild. They moved to Grove City where Howard worked at Cooper Bessemer until he retired. Pictured at the barn prior to the fire are l to r Margaret Brannan, Cora & Howard Brannan, Stella Brannan who was born in 1911.
