13 Stoughton Family Genealogy and History research manuscript by Burke Stoughton, Apollo, PA, May-October 1996; G929.2 Butler Area Public Library, Butler, PA. (This source erroneously lists the father of the children on this page to be John Walker Stoughton (1767-1833), descended from a Jonathon Stoughton, Timothy Stoughton etc. family from E. Windsor, CT.)
Notification by email Jan 2008 from the author, Burke Stoughton, indicates that the name John Walker Stoughton was erroneous, and that no connection to the Connecticut Stoughtons is presently known to us. He does however believe that such connection does exist. Burke Stoughton cautions that his now outdated publication at Butler Library should be used with caution, as it contains several errors. Samuel Stoughton, for example, was the son of William Stoughton (not John Walker Stoughton), and was a brother of John W. Stoughton. Samuel Stoughton names a brother Andrew as an executor of his will. This Samuel Stoughton's 2nd wife's name was Catherine McCune, and would be the Catherine mentioned in his will.
Burke Stoughton's research forward from this point (ie. the Stoughton family in Butler Co. PA) agrees with our findings and he has useful additions. For the children of John W. Stoughton he lists:
  • Luke (died 1838/39), married Margaret unknown, resided Muddy Creek; his will mentions 6 minor children age 1-16
  • Andrew (born 1802)
  • John (born 1805)
  • Barnard (born 1817)
  • Jacob (died ~1841)
  • Euphama married unknown Logan
  • Hannah (died ~1845)
  • Jane.
We are in communication with Burke Stoughton, and anticipate additional new documentation per his research of this family.

Luke Covert settled in Nothumberland Co. PA. He resided there until 1796, when he brought his family into the wilderness of Covert's run. He made his home west of where the Stone House was built in 1822.
Note: (Now in Brady Twp., the Stone House is at intersection of Rt. 8 & Rt 528; Covert Rd. runs east from West Liberty to Rt. 528. Covert Rd. runs roughly parallel to & south of Big Run creek, tributary to Slippery Rock Creek.)

Source Notes

  • Eichelberger cites source 11, "Covert Family of New York", for the 1795 marriage of Catherine Covert & John Stoughton in NJ. However, other sources indicate the Coverts were in Northumberland Co. by that date, so site of marriage is uncertain.
  • Will of John Stoughton lists son John and son Bernard; researcher Jeanne Eichelberger lists a son John Bernard.
  • Can not find 1830, 1840 census. In 1840 she may be living with one of her children.

*In 1850, Catherine Covert Stoughton, widow, apparently living next door to her son John. Andrew Stoughton in the next dwelling may be a son of John's.
* The Stoughton organizers of Muddy Creek Baptist church may be Catherine Covert Stoughton, her sons Jacob and Andrew, and her brother in law Samuel (who later became a Baptist minister).More likely however is that Catherine Stoughton is Catherine McCune, wife of Samuel Stoughton.

  • A Covert family, Isaac and Nancy, is on the 1870 census for Brady Twp, Butler Co, pg 9 (see James Irvin Hogue. There is no known relationship at this time. EBW, 19 Aug 2007
  • The 1840 census is speculation. The oldest female in the household is the correct age to be Catherine Covert, but it could also be Robert Logan's mother.

Research Notes

  • Research re. burial site of John & Catherine Stoughton, with negative results: No gravestones found at various Butler County cemeteries visited in 2006-2007 by E. Wilson Williams (Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, Wolf Creek Cemetery, Muddy Creek Cemetery, Prospect's Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Prospect Presbyterian Cemetery or West Liberty Cemetery). No record found in the entire 5 volume set of the Cemetery Inventory of Butler County, searched by research staff of the Butler Area Public Library, Oct. 2007.
This suggests burial without gravestones, or that their stones deteriorated beyond legibility by the time of the Inventory; or burial at a small private cemetery not included in the Inventory.
