Source Notes

  • To find census evidence of Mary Glenn before marriage will require knowing her fathers name.
  • The 1825 marriage record lists Mary Glenn as resident of Butler Township, Butler Co. PA. Using the ancestry.com search engine (May 2011), no Glenn entries were found in Butler Twp. in the 1820 census. The 1830 census may have a problem for Butler Twp., as no entries for that township were listed, by this search method.
  • Source 13 Voltz: finds grave at Andersonville Prison (Georgia, Civil War) marked Robert G. Campbell, "husband of Rachel W. Stoughton". We don't have the exact transcription, so don't know if wife Rachel is mentioned. Source 12, Butler County PA Archives Cemeteries.....Mount Zion Baptist (Isle Cemetery), abstracted by Dwight Cooper: lists marker for husband Robert G. Campbell; this may be a memorial marker, placed by GAR.
  • There is an 1870 census record for Franklin Twp., Butler Co., PA, Page 18, Lines 10-12, which shows Mary Stoughton, 69, living with Elisha Stoughton, 30, and John Stoughton, 24. This is likely not the right Mary Stoughton. There is an 1860 census for Concord Twp., Butler Co., PA, pg. 113, lines 27-32, which shows Elisha and John as being sons of Mary Stoughton and William Stoughton. These two brothers are apparently living with their mother, Mary Elizabeh Wick, in 1870; see page for William Stoughton (1797)

Research Notes

  • Burial site research re. Andrew Stoughton & wife Mary, with negative results: No gravestones found at various Butler County cemeteries visited in 2006-2007 by E. Wilson Williams (Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, Wolf Creek Cemetery, Muddy Creek Cemetery, Prospect's Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Prospect Presbyterian Cemetery or West Liberty Cemetery). No record found in the entire 5 volume set of the Cemetery Inventory of Butler County, searched by research staff of the Butler Area Public Library, Oct. 2007.
This suggests burial without gravestones, or that their stones deteriorated beyond legibility by the time of the Inventory; or burial at a small private cemetery not included in the Inventory.
  • 1870 United States Federal Census, Worth Twp., Butler Co., PA, pg 16, census date: 25 Jun 1870.
Lines 25-28: Benjamin Thompson age 23, farmer, b. Indiana; Emma age 23 keeping house, b. PA; Andrew age 1, b. PA; Glenn, Mary, age 68, 'living with family", b. PA.
This census record is for a different Mary Glenn who in the 1850 census is married to Andrew Glenn, with daughter Anna E. This daughter, Anna Emma Glenn married Benjamin Thompson. The age similarity to our Mary Glenn is coincidental. See: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1850FranklinTwpCensus.htm
  • 1870 United States Federal Census, Franklin Twp., Butler Co., PA, pg 18, census date: 21 Jul 1870.
Lines 10-12: Elisha Stoughton, 30, John Stoughton, 24, and Mary Stoughton, 69. Age for Mary is correct, John is too young, and Elisha is an unknown.
  • Recent correspondence (Aug. 1020; May 2011) suggests her name may have been "Mary Glenn Wick", or "Mary Wick Glenn", no source given other than "the web". If so, it raises the possibility of either Wick or Glenn as her maiden name and 1st marriage to a Glenn, or a 1st marriage to a Wick.
  • Name of wife of Andrew Stoughton: Family trees published in the Ancestry.com website list Andrew Stoughton's wife variously as Mary Glenn, Mary Glenn Wick, or Margaret McDonald. For "Mary Glenn Wick" parents are listed as John Wick and Margaret Ferguson. For "Mary Glenn", parents James Glenn and Janet Stirling are listed on a couple sites, though usually no parents are listed for "Mary Glenn". Some of the trees listing "Mary Glenn Wick" list a first husband named James Wick: however these trees list John Wick and Margaret Ferguson as the parents of both Mary Glenn Wick and of James Wick, her suggested husband. These sites also have the problem of listing children from the two suggested marriages that overlap in ages. Finally, a second Andrew Stoughton (William Andrew Stoughton (b. 1796)) is listed as married to Mary Elizabeth Wick. These problems may arise from the fact that these family trees on ancestry have no space for listing unproven research findings that one wishes to retain, so a variety on "possibilities" get posted.
    • The family of John Wick in the 1820 census (Center Twp, Butler Co., PA) is listed three entries from the John Stoughton family. The John Wick entry has a female of appropriate age to be "Mary Wick/Glenn". The John Stoughton entry has a male of appropriate age to be Andrew Stoughton. An entry for a Samuel Stoughton of correct age to be Samuel, the youngest brother of John Stoughton, is listed in the household next to that of John Stoughton, so we believe this to be in fact our ancestor John Stoughton. Having resided as a near neighbor to John Wick lends credence to the idea of Andrew Stoughton possibly marrying a daughter of John Wick.
    • There is a James Glenn in Buffalo Twp., Butler Co., PA in 1820 with a daughter of correct age to be our ancestor Mary. Buffalo Twp. is in the southeast corner of Butler County, somewhat distant from Center Twp. which lies immediately north of Butler Twp. & the city of Butler.
