8 Jeanne Bortmes Eichelberger, correspondence, 2006. Jeanne lists among the children of John Stoughton (born ~1773) a son John Barnard Stoughton, rather than two sons, John Stoughton and Barnard Stoughton. She assigns to John Barnard Stoughton the wife Nancy Boyle and the children we find elsewhere assigned to John Stoughton (born 1805). The will of John Stoughton (born ~1773) names sons John and Barnard separately. Until further primary documentation is found, we will follow the implication in the will that there was a son John and a son Barnard.
9 Covert Family of New York by Robert Thorton Covert. Notes that John Stoughton married Catherine Covert; lists her parents as Lucas Covert and Cornelia Van Zandt, who were cousins; lists the children of Lucas And Cornelia Van Zandt Covert. (This source noted by Jeanne Bortmes Eichelberger; not seen by this researcher.)
10 Abstracts of the wills of 5 sons of John Stoughton received from correspondent Dolores Swaney.

11 Stoughton Family Genealogy and History research manuscript by Burke Stoughton, Apollo, PA, May-October 1996; G929.2 Butler Area Public Library, Butler, PA. (Burke Stoughton lists the father of the children on this page to be John Walker Stoughton (1767-1833), descended from a Jonathon Stoughton, Timothy Stoughton etc. family from E. Windsor, CT. We believe this connection to be in error, and that the correct name was John Stoughton, not John Walker Stoughton, and that the family came from NJ and NY. However, Burke Stoughton's research forward from this point (ie. the Stoughton family in Butler Co. PA) agrees with our findings and he has useful additions.) For the children of John (Walker) Stoughton he lists:
Luke (died 1838/39), married Margaret unknown, resided Muddy Creek, will mentions 6 minor children age 1-16; Samuel (born 1796); Andrew (born 1802); John (born 1805); Barnard (born 1817); Jacob (died ~1841); Euphama married unknown Logan; Hannah (died ~1845); Jane.
12 Personal correspondence from Elizabeth Wilson Williams, granddaughter of Bert Winfred Wilson.

Source Notes

  • Will of John Stoughton lists son John and son Bernard; researcher Jeanne Eichelberger lists a son John Bernard.
  • Can not find 1830, 1840 census. In 1840 she may be living with one of her children.

*In 1850, Catherine Covert Stoughton, widow, apparently living next door to her son John. Andrew Stoughton in the next dwelling may be a son of John's.
*The Stoughton organizers of Muddy Creek Baptist church may be Catherine Covert Stoughton, her sons Jacob and Andrew, and her brother in law Samuel (who later became a Baptist minister).More likely however is that Catherine Stoughton is Catherine McCune, wife of Samuel Stoughton.

A Covert family, Isaac and Nancy, is on the 1870 census for Brady Twp, Butler Co, pg 9 (see James Irvin Hogue. There is no known relationship at this time. EBW, 19 Aug 2007

Research Notes

  • Research re. burial site of John & Catherine Stoughton, with negative results: No gravestones found at various Butler County cemeteries visited in 2006-2007 by E. Wilson Williams (Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, Wolf Creek Cemetery, Muddy Creek Cemetery, Prospect's Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Prospect Presbyterian Cemetery or West Liberty Cemetery). No record found in the entire 5 volume set of the Cemetery Inventory of Butler County, searched by research staff of the Butler Area Public Library, Oct. 2007.
This suggests burial without gravestones, or that their stones deteriorated beyond legibility by the time of the Inventory; or burial at a small private cemetery not included in the Inventory.
