Burke describes having had an old paper (now disintegrated), a note sent home by William Stoughton, who was with Andrew Jackson, at New Orleans and he mentions his brother Luke as being well. "The note opened with a short phrase praising God and then went on to say that he was as well as could be expected, as was Luke, and that he was not liking the south "because of the insects was so bad" and he mentioned the swamp. There was one passing mention of the British and the fact that a fight was imminent and he asked those at home to pray for them. The note was signed Will Stoten, and sent to ____ Stoton, Butler County PA" | |

Land in question is ~86 acres in Worth Twp, Butler Co., bounded by Wimer and others on North, Abt. Wilson on East, Thomas Cooper and John Wimer on South and John Patterson on the West. Portion belonging to Mary Ann, William and Covert was sold to Thomas Stoughton (son of Andrew Stoughton. Thomas has died, leaving a widow (Mary Jane) who was declared incompetent and five minor children (Rebecca E., Margaret C., John H., William R., and Anderson). Jacob Stoughton (presumedly Thomas's brother, not the son of Luke) is the executor of the Thomas Stoughton will. The portion of the Luke Stoughton land belonging to Margaret Jane was sold to William G. Stoughton. The portion belonging to Jacob and Nancy Stoughton remains in the Luke Stoughton estate. * Note: Most likely these various guardianship proceedings were done so that the control of Margaret's children's financial affairs would be separate from her new marriage. The minor children were living with in the Maberry household in 1850 (source 9). |
