Barnard VanZant Stoughton was one of ten children of John Stoughton, of English descent, and Catherine Covert, of Dutch descent. They had settled in Butler County, PA by about 1802, and were members of the Muddy Creek Baptist congregation.
Barnard, known to his family as "Barney", married at about age 20 to Susan Harvey. They had six children together. Susan Harvey (Stoughton)sometime between 1846 and 1848, possibly at the birth of daughter Susan Blanche. Four of their six children were under six years old. The infant Susan was taken in to be raised by Mary Ann Harvey (Dustin), her mother's sister and, with the Dustin family, lived in Illinois for a time.
Barnard Stoughton moved north to the area of Venango & Clarion counties, where he met Susan Myer and remarried in 1848. They had three more children by 1854. All of his children were born in Pennsylvania, but the two sets of half-siblings were born in different counties. Susan Myer was the widow of John Hagan, and had a son, John Edward Hagan; he does not appear in the 1850 census to be living in the Barnard Stoughton household.

(This source erroneously lists the father of the children on this page to be John Walker Stoughton (1767-1833), descended from a Jonathon Stoughton, Timothy Stoughton etc. family from E. Windsor, CT.) Notification by email Jan 2008 from the author, Burke Stoughton, indicates that the name John Walker Stoughton was erroneous, and that no connection to the Connecticut Stoughtons is presently known to us. Burke Stoughton cautions that his now outdated publication at Butler Library should be used with caution, as it contains several errors. Samuel Stoughton, for example, was the son of William Stoughton (not John Walker Stoughton), and was a brother of John W. Stoughton. Samuel Stoughton names a brother Andrew as an executor of his will. This Samuel Stoughton's 2nd wife's name was Catherine McCune, and would be the Catherine mentioned in his will. Burke Stoughton's research forward from this point (ie. the Stoughton family in Butler Co. PA) agrees with our findings and he has useful additions. For the children of John W. Stoughton he lists: Luke (died 1838/39), married Margaret unknown, resided Muddy Creek; his will mentions 6 minor children age 1-16 Andrew (born 1802) John (born 1805) Barnard (born 1817) Jacob (died ~1841) Euphama married unknown Logan Hannah (died ~1845) Jane. We are in communication with Burke Stoughton, and anticipate additional new documentation per his research of this family.

The Stoughton family moved to southwest Missouri in 1867. Jennie taught school several years near Pierce City, Missouri. She taught one term near Sherman, Texas. Jennie also ran a millinery store for 16 months. The family moved to Barber County in August 1878. Jennie taught at District 16 west of Medicine Lodge. Jennie Stoughton and W.G. Osborn were married 2-12-1879. Their children were Leon, Cecile, Ermine and George. They reared them in the country. W.G. passed away 8-4-1919 and Jennie 6-23-1940. Pg. 2 "My mother was living on her farm near Matildaville, Pennsylvania when she met my father, Barnard VanZant Stoughton, who was working at his trade, the shoe business, in Kalensburg, Armstrong, Co., Pa. When I was about a year old they moved out to my mother's farm and there my two younger sisters were born. They then gathered the rest of the children into the home where those mischievous boys kept things stirring." Pg. 3 "My mother, Susan Myer, had been the wife of John Hagan who died when they had been married twelve years, leaving her with one little boy, John Edward Hagan. Father had married Susan Harvey, but she died leaving six children: John, Joseph, Elliott, Hannah, Catharine, and Susan Blanche, the baby whom the mother gave to her sister, a Mrs. Dustin, who took her to Illinois... When we left mother's farm, we moved to Clarion County on a farm owned by one of mother's brothers and lived there one year; but father could not farm and do much at his trade too. So we moved into a little burg named Bellville. It was a crossroad town of a few houses, ...Sligo Furnace was (2 miles) south, Madison Furnace five miles west, Polk Furnace four miles north, and Curlville three miles East." Pg. 4 Children walked 1 1/2 miles to school. The family was in Bellville in 1858 and during the 3 years that Jennie was seven-ten yrs of age. Pg. 6 re. Bellville "the three little girls of us had happy times living among our mother's people ...We liked best to go to our uncle Sam and aunt Betsy Morgan's house because they had no children...My mother had seven brothers: Billy, Val, John, Jake, Sam, Joe and Jim..(she) had only two sisters: Polly Johnson and Betsy Morgan. Father's brothers were Billy, Andrew, John, Luke, Jake and Barny. Barney was our father. He had three sisters: Mrs. Effie Logan, Mrs. Hannah Patterson and Mrs. Jane Boyle. Most of father's people lived in Butler Co. Pa., and most of mother's in Clarion Co. Pa. My children, all being Jayhawkers, have never known any of their "great relationship"." Pg. 7 After living in Bellville three years Barnard became sick with tuberculosis. The doctor recommended he move to the Pine woods north in Venango Co. He bought 50 acres of wooded land from Dave Gill, sawmill owner who paid the land owners to cut and haul logs to his sawmill. Barnard bought a team, and with his sons, and daughter Kate as cook, set about building a log house large enough for "when he got all his family together again." • Per the obituary of Barnard V. Stoughton's wife Susan Myer, her first husband was John Hagan, father of John E. Hagan. Susan's son John E. Hagan married Barnard's niece Martha Boyle. Both families apparently originated in Clarion Co. PA.
• Per the memoir of Jennie Stoughton Osborn, her mother's farm was in Matildaville, PA. Matildaville, found in the 1865 map of Clarion County, is in Perry Twp., NW of West Freedom, at what appears in 1986 to be a center of gas and oil wells. See."Treasure Maps of Clarion County" by Hank Nufnagel (see Contributors page at left for contact information). She says her father was working in "Kalensburg, Armstrong Co." PA. Callensburg is in Clarion Co., which in 1839 was formed from Armstrong and Venango counties.

 * Susan Blanche Stoughton went to IL with Aunt Mrs. Dustin. Confirmed in 1860 census Roundside IL, where her aunt appears to be remarried perhaps, with a son Amstian W Dustin age 12 , and Susanna Straughton (sic)age 13 in the household.
 * Catherine Stoughton apparently married William Whitman in PA, before they joined her father Barnard in migrating westward. Her son John S. Whitman is mentioned in the "Memories" book; the family in Lawrence MO & Newton Co. MO in census of 1870, 1900 & 1910.
