  • Pg. 2 "My mother was living on her farm near Matildaville, Pennsylvania when she met my father, Barnard VanZant Stoughton, who was working at his trade, the shoe business, in Kalensburg, Armstrong, Co., Pa."
  • Pg. 12 "While we younger children were growing up, two of our brothers and two of our sisters were married. One brother, Elliot, went to Washington State..."
  • Pg. 16 "At Odin, IL, we waited again several hours for a train going west to St. Louis. When we arrived at the Mississippi again, ... we were driven to the Gault House, where we expected to meet father. Brother Elliot was coming from Washington, and he, also, was to meet us there. ... When he came and found us there and Elliot, too, he saw the necessity of moving out of the city." [NB: this takes place in autumn/winter of 1866 - RBW 16 Aug 2012]
  • Pg. 17 "Brother Elliot took the real old-fashioned Missouri chills followed by penumonia." [NB This took place in spring 1867. I can't find any mention of Elliot marrying and he isn't mentioned after his sickness on pg. 17 - RBW 16 Aug 2012]

Source Notes

  • A previous version of this page used extensive data from an undocumented webpage which eventually disappeared. We have re-written this page to remove data that was only available from this unsubstantiated source. The middle name "Harvey" falls into this category, but changing a page name in this wiki is a pain so for the time being I have left the page title the same. However, to the best of our knowledge at this time, the middle initial H is all we can stand behind.

Research

From Jennie Stoughton Osborn's memoirs [5], we know that Elliot went to WA (pg. 12). Although he meets back up with Jennie in Missouri (pg. 16), it is not clear if this was a visit and he returns to WA or not. If he does return to WA, there are some documents relating to an Elliot H. Stoughton in Lewis Co., WA some time later:

R1 Marriage Certificate indicating that Elliot H. Stoughton, born in Butler Co., PA, on 22 Oct 1842, residing at (illegible), sawyer by occupation, was married before and divorced in Clarion Co., PA, on 28 Sep 1887. Rosalie C. Coleman, born in Forest Co., PA, on 1 Jul 1848, residing in Forest Co., PA, seamstress by occupation, was married before and divorced in Jefferson Co., PA, on 25 Feb 1889. They were married in Tylersburg, PA on 6 May 1889.

Many persons in Chehalis, Centralia, and other points about here felt a distinct earthquake shock about 5 o'clock. A card from E. H. Stoughton of Fulton in the western part of the county says the shock was felt there at 4:30 first followed by a slight shock fifteen minutes later." Chehalis Bee, 1 Mar 1895, page 2, column 3. If this is our Elliot, then by 1889 he is married to Roselie California Stoughton and by 1892 they are living in WA. Additional records are available for her:

R7 Obituary for Mrs. Rosalie Justice in the Chehalis Bee-Nugget, dated Friday 10 May 1929. Rosalie Justice, who had moved to Riffe 40 years earlier, died on Sunday, 5 May 1929, following a paralytic stroke she suffered on 30 Apr 1929. She was 81 and born in PA. Her husband and a large family of step-children survived her. Burial at Riffe cemetery.

R8 Gravestone for Rosalee Justice, 1848-1929, at Doss Cemetery, Mossyrock, Lewis Co., WA. From findagrave.com, regarding Riffe Cemetery: "The original location of Riffe Cemetery is now under the Riffe Lake reservoir created when the Mossyrock Dam was constructed. Before the dam was completed in 1968, the majority of the graves were relocated to Doss Cemetery in Mossyrock. Others were relocated to cemeteries in lewis and surrounding counties. Although the original cemetery records were destroyed in a fire around 1900, some records can be found at the Chehalis Timberland Library and Lewis County Historical Museum."

So, from this, it appears that Roselie/Rosalie/Rosalee California Coleman married Elliot H. Stoughton in 1889 and they moved to WA within the year, but by 1901 she had married her next husband.

  • The timing on travel to and from Washington for Elliott is somewhat unknown. If all of the above sources are relevant, then he was in PA for the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census, but was in WA for some time leading up to 1866, when he met with his father and sister in St. Louis and stayed there until at least spring of 1867. He married Rosalie in 1889 in PA, which is approximately the same year she moved to WA according to the obituary, so presumably he moved there with her at that time.
