Source Notes

  • The William B. Stoughton found in the 1930 census for Jacksonville, FL, might be considered an unlikely match given that he is in a new location and found by himself, however I consider this match to be strong based on the fact that his occupation of "maker of instruments" matches well with the reasonably unusual occupation on the death certificate of "retired violin manufacturer."

Research

I'm having a hard time finding good documentation linking the William B. Stoughton who marries Eva A. Bradford in PA (he appears in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census entries and the marriage certificate) and the William Bernard Stoughton married to Sue Ann Byerly who lived in NC and died in FL (he appears in the 1930 and 1940 census entries along with the death certificate).

The census in 1920 is a bit suspicious as he is listed as married by there is no spouse or kids present. The WWI draft card might be a link, in that the birth date matches reasonably with the one on the death certificate (with a couple of one-off errors) but it also mentions Sadie Kirkenmeister by name, which is definitely the PA William's sister.

The best link right now is that the NC William's mother's maiden name listed on his death certificate is Spence, which is what we believe our William B. Stoughton's mother's name is, but this connection is not strong even in Elliott Harvey Stoughton's data. I've structured this page assuming that the same William married Eva and Sue, and at some point moved to NC, as this is how A. Fix presented the data to me when she provided the Death Certificate and Marriage License sources. However, I would like to find some additional information, perhaps in living memory, that concretely links the NC William to the PA William.
