27 Report of the Adjutant General, State of Indiana, Volume II pages 143-144, sectioned titled "Sixteenth Regiment - Three Years' Service." This document gives a narrative description of the movements and battles fought by the 16th IN Infantry Regiment between Jul 1862 and Jun 1865. From this document, we can surmise that Uzziel B. Church was in Indianapolis from his enrollment 10 Jul 1862 until 19 Aug 1862 when the regiment left for Kentucky. The battle of Richmond, KY, in which Uzziel was injured, took place on 30 Aug 1862. On 20 Nov 1862 the regiment marched to Cairo, then to Memphis, staying there until 1 Dec 1862. At this point, they moved down the river to participate in the Vicksburg campaign. On 25 Dec 1862, they began marching towards Dallas, TX. On 1 Jan 1863, they were engaged at Chickasaw Bayou near Vicksburg. They re-embarked on 3 Jan 1863 and on 10 Jan 1863 arrived at Arkansas Post. The battle for the fort here was successful and the enemy surrendered on 11 Jan 1863. The regiment moved on to Young's Point on 17 Jan 1863 to help dig a canal. On 14 Apr 1863, the regiment marched from Milliken's Bend to Smith's Plantation. From there, transports were taken on 26 Apr 1863 down the Mississippi to Hard Times Landing. From here, the regiment traveled on foot to a camp below Grand Gulf. On 30 Apr 1863, the regiment re-boarded transport boats and proceeded to Bruinsburgh, MS. From there, they marched all night toward Port Gibson. On 2 May, the regiment entered Port Gibson and stayed there until the following day. There was combat on 16 May 1863 near Edward's Station, after which the regiment marched to Black River Bridge where further combat ensued. It then proceeded to the rear at Vicksburg and entered the trenches there on 19 May 1863. The siege lasted until 4 Jul 1863. Afterwards, the regiment was shipped to New Orleans, where they stayed until they were mustered out on 30 Jun 1865. On 1 Jul 1865, the regiment began marching back to Indianapolis, IN, arriving on 10 Jul 1865. [2]
