At the age of 17 he moved with his father's family to Terre Haute, IN. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, enlisting with the 11th IN Infantry at the outbreak of the war and again with the 16th IN Infantry until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. He had 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Funeral was Monday, 16 Oct 1916 at the Auburn church. Note that the scanned image at right seems to be taken from a newspaper published on 25 Oct 1916, and thus likely a reprint of the original 14 Oct 1916 obit from the Terre Haute Tribune. However, the information regarding the 16 Oct 1916 burial would not have been present in the 14 Oct 1916 obit, so obtaining the TH Tribune version might still provide original information.
