Native of England

Mary Hunt, wife of Edward Waldron, lived in Warwickshire, England. The Renaissance had brought Europe out of the Dark Ages, and two events of the turn of the century (1492 & 1517) would influence the direction of the Waldron family. The New World was discovered, the era of exploration followed soon by that of colonization; and the Protestant Reformation began, with its attendant religious and political turmoil all over Europe.
The only child of Edward and Mary Hunt Waldron known to us was John Waldron,(known as Johannes Waldron after his immigration to Holland).
The religious preference of the Hunt and Waldron families of England is unknown to us. The tumultuous reversals of church loyalty by the changing monarchs left the populace always insecure, whether Catholic or Protestant. The Waldrons, at least in later generations, were Protestant. (For the family of Edward's great-grandson Joseph Waldron, the family records are to be found in the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam.) Mary Hunt (1560-1620) lived during the reign (1553-1558) of the aggressively Catholic Queen Mary whose heresy trials threatened all Protestants, followed in 1558 by the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth. Whether this family was caught up in the religious turmoil or managed to avoid it,that or something of politics or land availability perhaps caused Edward and Mary's son John to migrate to the tolerant country of Holland along with many other religious refugees of the era.

English history in the time of Mary Hunt Waldron

  • The religious Reformation movement began in 1517.
  • Henry VIII ruled England from 1509-1547, instituting the Protestant Church of England.
  • The child Edward VI and his two Protectors ruled from 1547-1553; the country remained Protestant.
  • Queen Mary ruled from 1553-1558. She was, like her mother, Catherine of Aragon, a fervent Catholic, and under her direction many Protestants were convicted of heresy and burned at the stake.
  • Elizabeth I, a Protestant, ruled from 1558-1603. The Spanish Armada was defeated in 1558.

UNDOCUMENTED ANCESTRY

We find numerous sources with tantalizing data, but hesitate to adopt their findings when:

  • the lines of descent conflict from one web source to another.
  • documentation & sources are absent or insufficient
  • the sources listed are unavailable to us, so that scope or ambiguity can't be assessed

We offer this page as an ancestral possibility, with the caveat that it is unconfirmed by us.
