Immigrant 1654 to New Amsterdam, Dutch colony in America

The brothers Resolved and Joseph Waldron emmigrated to New Amsterdam with their wives and children, Joseph in 1652 and Resolved two years later in 1654. They bought a house together on Broadway near Wall Street, and joined the fellowship of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam.
Five years before embarking for the Dutch colony in America, Joseph Waldron "living near the hoeck of Passenger Street in Amsterdam", appeared before the orphans court on 12 May 1649, "on the eve of his second marriage", and made arrangements (bonds) for the maintenance of two children by his marriage to first wife Aeltie Hendricks, "as they had no property". It is also suggested that one of these two children may have been left behind in Amsterdam when Joseph & famiy emigrated, to be raised by its grandmother, Maria Goverts. This speculation is based on the facts that no records for the child had been found here, and that Joseph Waldron ordered part of his salary to be paid to his mother, Maria Goverts; the last recorded of these payments was for 48 florins, 2 months salary, made on 30 Aug 1661.
In New Amsterdam, Joseph was butler to the garrison and in charge of the magazine. He died in 1663, requesting a notary to draw up his will shortly before he died. He said that there would be nothing left (presumably after debts were paid), but if there should be, it should go to his wife who wished to return to the Fatherland. (See Resolved Waldron (II), who died similarly, having invested so heavily in land, that debt was expected initially to obliterate his estate.) Joseph's will also represents that there were "six minor children, two of whom are by a former marriage". The widow, Annetie Daniels, appointed Resolved Waldron, "her husband's brother" and Hendrick Jansen vander Vin "who is her oldest and most intimate friend", as guardians of her surviving children. Whether or not she revisited Holland, she remarried in New Amsterdam in 1668 to Harman Smeeman, and agian in 1682 to Coenraet Ten Eyck.
On 23 Jan. 1661, son John, not quite 8 years old, died accidentally in his step-father's mill.

It is uncertain whether she visited Holland, as she was m. here in 1668 to Harman Smeeman and again in 1682 to Coenraet Ten Eyck. Joseph Waldron's children known to us were Sarah, Daniel, Mary, Anna, Deborah and John. Deborah d. in inf., and John when not quite 8 yrs. old... Daniel Waldron, b. 1650 at Amsterdam, m. in 1673 Sarah Rutgers, dr. of Rutger Willemsen. He was a gun-stock maker, but while serving in the city guards against Leister, lost an eye and was otherwise badly hurt by the premature discharge of "a great gone" (sic), Mar. 19, 1691....Daniel Waldron and his son Joseph were admitted freemen Aug. 30, 1698, He had chn. 2	Harlem Commons Syndicate of New York, New York Times, various issues of 1880-1890, see link at right. This syndicate of Dutch landowners in New Amsterdam/New York fought to retain their land rights as the city apparently condemned land for the building of piers, and for the building of the Harlem River Ship Canal. In this regard the land acquisitions of Resolved Waldron mentioned in James Riker's "Harlem (City of New York)" are of interest. The Spuyten Duyvil neighborhood is mentioned as is the Round Meadow, in this neighborhood. (Use link to text at right). Stoughton, a 5th-great granddaughter of ancestor Joseph Waldron, says in her memoir, "The Early Days", printed 1927 by The Barber County Index' (Kansas), page 88: "When the French held the country around Detroit, they planted pear seed until there had been many fine trees of this same variety that an ancestor of my father, Peter Stuyvesant, and an early governor of New York had brought from Europe in 1668." (It is possible that Jennie S. Stoughton's family stories and tradition included Resolved Waldron, brother of Joseph Waldron and an associate of Peter Stuyvesant, and that the more famous Stuyvesant had erroneously been remembered as being the family ancestor. Or, perhaps Jennie Stoughton's statement is true, and both men are family connected. We have no evidence of Stuyvesant as an ancestor to our Stoughtons. On 3 Apr 1655 they bought a house and lot on Broadway. Joseph Waldron died bet. 1 Feb 1662 & 20 Dec. 1663, evidently in New Amsterdam, leaving 6 minor children, 2 of whom were from a former marriage. Guardians appointed for the minor children: Resolved Waldron and (at Annetje's request) Hendrick Jansen van der Vin, her oldest and most familiar friend. Resolved Waldron states that when his late brother came to marry the widow, the children by the former marriage had no property, and that the widow intends to depart for Fatherland. Mattheus de Vos declares that Josep Waldron sent for him to draw up a will. Josep indicated there would be nothing left, then if anything should be remaining it should be used to assure payment of the passage money of his surviving wife. Annetje Daniels attended the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam. Children of Annetje Daniels and Joseph Willemszen Waldron are: Daniel Josephs Waldron b. bef. 31 Dec 1647 Amsterdam, Noord Holland, d. aft. 19 Mar 1690/91, New Amsterdam, NY.

Source notes

• Number of children:"Harlem (City of New York), Its Origin and Early Annals", by James Riker", leaves a question regarding the total number of children of Joseph Waldron.
  -Riker discusses Joseph's two children by first wife Aeltie Hendricks and says one of these two perhaps remained in Holland as "it is not named in our records here..."
  - quoting proceedings of the orphans court, 1663, Riker says "appearing that there were six minor children, two of whom were by a former marriage"
  - Riker names six children, 5 with birth dates. Sarah's birthdate places her as a child of the 1st marriage. Deborah's date is unknown, but the statement that she "died in infancy" would imply that she was not the child left in Holland to be raised by the grandmother. The children are named by Riker in birth order, so far as indicated by birth dates given. Deborah was named last,implying that she was the youngest child, but without birth date.
  This would seem to indicate at least 7 children total, 6 of whom were minors in New Amsterdam at the time of Joseph's death.
  -Specifically named as 2nd wife Annetje Daniels' child is son Daniel Waldron, to whom she leaves land, along with "son-in-law Delamontagne", implying that Anna Waldron (Delamontagne) was her daughter.
• Date of immigrationIt is clear from "Harlem (City of New York)" that Joseph had already remarried before immigration. The biography re. Resolved Waldron says that he immigrated in 1654, and that he then with his brother Joseph and their wives were received into the New Amsterdam church. The implication is that Resolved & Joseph immigrated together, but the year of Joseph's immigration is not actually explicit.

For information on her ancestry, see the LERNOUT and COURTS families in subsequent installments of this article. The brothers Joseph and Resolved Waldron immigrated to New Am- sterdam with their families during the last half of 1654 or possibly early in 1655. On 3 April 1655 they bought a house and lot on Broadway (New York Historical Manuscripts: Dutch, vol. 5, transl. and ed. Charles T. Gehring, 1983, p. 391; Icon. 2:228, citing RNA 7:146). At some-point he was butler to the garrison and in charge of the magazine of the company (Har. 692 n.). On 18 November 1658 the granting of the request of Joseph Waldron to be appointed deputy sheriff of Fort Orange was postponed (CDM 202). On 19 December 1658 Joseph Waldron's -petition for* an allowance for house rent was granted (CDM 204). Joseph Waldron died between 1 February 1662 when he witnessed a document (New York Historical Manuscripts: Dutch, The Register of Salomon Lachaire... , ed. Kenneth Scott and Kenn Stryker-Rodda, 1978, p. 109) and 20 December 1663, evidently in New Amsterdam. On the latter date the records of the Orphan Masters of New Amsterdam show that Joseph Waldron had died, leaving six minor children, two of whom were from a former marriage. The records read as follows: In the City Hall, Thursday, 20 December 1663 Annetje Daniel, widow of Joseph Waldron, and with her Resolved Waldron and Mattheus de Vos, appearing: Resolved Waldron, states that when his late brother came to marrv the widow, the children by the former marriage had no property, and that the widow intends to depart for Fatherland. Mattheus de Vos declares that Josep Waldron dec'd did send for him to draw up a will: coming to him and enquiring into his condition, Josep gave him for answer, that there would be nothing left, (see notes for remainer of text).
