Native of England

Edward Waldron lived in Warwickshire, England The tumultuous reversals of church loyalty by the changing monarchs left the populace always insecure, whether Catholic or Protestant. Apparently the Waldrons, at least in later generations, were Protestant. (For the family of Edward's great-grandson Joseph Waldron, the family records are to be found in the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam.) Edward Waldron (1552-1619) lived during the reign (1553-1558) of the aggressively Catholic Queen Mary whose heresy trials threatened all Protestants, followed in 1558 by the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth.
If our birth date and place for Edward's son John/Johannes Waldron are correct, the family was still in England in 1579, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. John appears to have left sometime before 1610, the year in which he married Maria Covert in Harlem, Netherlands.

English history in the time of the Waldrons

  • The religious Reformation movement began in 1517.
  • Henry VIII ruled England from 1509-1547, instituting the Protestant Church of England.
  • The child Edward VI and his two Protectors ruled from 1547-1553; the country remained Protestant.
  • Queen Mary ruled from 1553-1558. She was, like her mother, Catherine of Aragon, a fervent Catholic, and under her direction many Protestants were convicted of heresy and burned at the stake.
  • Elizabeth I, a Protestant, ruled from 1558-1603. The Spanish Armada was defeated in 1558.

Conjecture

While our Waldrons appear to have been from Warwickshire (in central England just south of Birmingham), Waldron is an old family name in England, and found in widespread areas. "Wald" refers to one who lived in the woodlands or a forester; thus the name would be as common as "Smith", or "Miller". However, just for fun, view the minimal remains of a moat fortification, "Waldron Castle", found in Sussex. It is about 12 miles due north of Eastbourne (which lies on the southwest coast of England). Waldron Castle is about halfway between Eastbourne and Royal Turnbridge Wells.
