Jean Valentin Ranc was probably born in Paris, date not known, where his father Jean Ranc had been born and was a Hugenot minister. The family fled to Germany in 1685 when King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes and resumed persecution of Protestants. As his father was born in 1641, Jean Valentin could have been born as early as the 1660's, but as he did not marry in France, but only after the move to Germany, it is likely he may have been born later, in the very late 1660's or early 1670's, which would make him a teen-ager when the family fled Paris in 1685.
In Mannheim, Germany, his name spelling became Hans Valentine Ranck. He met and married Margaretha Phillipes, who was of Dutch and German heritage. Together they had six children, two of whom died in childhood. He died a relatively young man, in 1710, and his family was cared for by his father for a couple years until he also died in 1712. At least three of Hans' children (Michael, Philip, and Susanna Margaretha)married in Germany and then emigrated in 1728 & 1729, to settle in America in the area of Earl Township, Lancaster Co. PA.

R-1 Biographical Annals of Lancaster County by John F. Meginness, publ. J.H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1903; p.447, biography of David W. Ranck
David W. Ranck born 1842, resided in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co. PA He descended from a Philip Ranck, "the first ancestor of the Ranck family in America"... who was of German and Swiss parentage, and who (immigrated) in 1740...." Philip Ranck had a son John Ranck, whose descendant Andrew Ranck was great-grandfather of the subject, David W. Ranck.
Ed.: The date of immigration (1740) differs by about 11 yrs from the version above, but both Ranck families appear to include an immigrant Philip Ranck, and to settle in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co. PA. This biography includes many named descendants of John Ranck, son of Philip Ranck. It is interesting that David W. Ranck was of "Swiss & German" parentage. Our Ranck sources cite French & German parentage, but the Schnader family that daughter Susanna Margretha marries into was Swiss.
