Of the ship "Allen" passengers, on the Captain's list is spelled "Snyder"; on the Oath of Allegiance list, "Schneider," and on the Oath of Abjuration list, "Schneder." The names are Christian, Jacob, and Mathias; Magdelin and Susanah. Apparently two of the men were married. It is believed that the home of the Schneders was in Switzerland, near the boundary line of Baden and Wurtemburg. After landing at Philadelphia they soon started for (Weberthal) Weaverland, where their friends, George, Henry and Jacob Weber had preceded them by several years. The Schneders were followers of Zwingli, but the Webers were Mennonites.
"Information about the early generations of the Schneder family can be found in a small pamphlet by the late Reverend Charles B. Schneder, The Schneder Family, prepared for the Family Reunion, September 15, 1929, 37 pages. The writer has a copy in his files."
Of the three Schneders, Christian remained in Weaverland and became the progenitor, among many others, of the late Aaron W. Snader, Esquire, once member of the Legislature of Pennsylvania. Mathias and Jacob went northeast and took up, by patent, 250 acres of land about where Center Church now stands, two miles south of Bowmansville. Jacob also purchased land from William Morris, the Welshman who received one of the first warrants for land within Brecknock Township.

  • List A (Captain's list), dated 11 Sept 1729 included: Christian Snyder, Jacob Snyder, Mathias Snyder, (no Snyder under age 15 listed), Susannah Snyder, Magdelin Snyder.
  • N.B. the Ship cleared from Cows in the Isle of Wight. "At the Courthouse of Philadelphia, September 15th, 1729...A List was presented of the names of Fifty nine Palatines, who with their Families, making in all about One hundred & twenty six Persons, were imported in the Ship Allen, James Craigie, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from Cows, as by Clearance thence dated 7th of July last." From the Minutes of the Provincial Council, printed in Colonial Records, Vol. III, pg. 368.
  • List B, Signers of the oath of allegiance to England, dated 15 Sept 1729, included: Christian Schneider, Mattdes Schneider; (Jacob Schneider does not appear on the list, but there is a name transcribed as Jacob Heider. No Jacob Heider appears on List A. It is possible that Jacob's script signature has been miss-transcribed from List B. )

13 Biographical Annals of Lancaster County Pennsylvania, J. H. Beers & Co. 1903, pgs 109-111.

Matheis Schneider; Jacob Schneider & wife Magdalen; and Christian Schneider & wife Susanna Margretha; with fifty-six other Palatinates and their families, sailed from Cowes, Isle of Wight, on 7 July 1729, in the ship "Allen", James Craigie, master. They landed at Philadelphia, and took the oath of allegiance to King George II of England, Sept. 15, 1729.
They originally came from northern Switzerland, near the boundary line of Baden and Wurtemberg, Germany. Some time prior to their coming to America went to Holland, thence to England, with a view of being transported to Pennsylvania. They settled in Weber-Thal, Lancaster Co., PA., where their friends, George Weber, Henry Weber and Jacob Weber, Swiss Memonites, had settled a few years earlier...

14 Application for Membership in the National Society Sons of the American Revolution, 1948, for applicant Willard S. Fenstermacher.
As per SAR membership rules, applicants must demonstrate direct male lineage to a person who served in some fashion in the revolutionary war. Mr. Fenstermacher gives his direct ancestry through Johan Christian Schnaeder and Susanna Margaretha Ranck. Their son, Michael Sneder, is listed has having been a Private, 3rd Class, 1st Company, 5th Battalion, Lancaster County [PA] Militia. Mr. Fenstermacher indicates that this information along with the data concerning his ancestry is contained in the Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. VII, Page 497-515-992. He also indicates that the name Sneder is sometimes spelled Schneder, Snader, Schneider.

Source notes

  • Several of our sources seem to go back to the work of J. Allan Skiles.
  • Weaverland appears to be a small community near the boundary of Earl and East Earl townships, on the south side of the Conestoga River, Lancaster Co. PA. Terre Hill is nearby, north of the Conestoga River and nearer to Black Creek in East Earl Twp.

Conjecture

  • The "Allen" ship's list of passengers includes Christian and Susan Schneider, presumed to be Johan Christian Schnaeder and wife Susanna Margaretha Ranck. If so, their infant daughter Margaretha, born in Switzerland, would be about 4 months old at sailing; she is not included on the passenger list. In addition to them, two more Schneiders are listed, Mathew, and Magdalene.
