David W. Ranck
David W. Ranck was apparently born in 1842, West Earl Twp., Lancaster Co. PA, to John Ranck & wife Elizabeth Wiedman. David married at age 22 to Elizabeth Groff, in 1864. Three years later their first child, a daughter, died at birth. Over the next six years they had three more children, a son and two daughters. His wife Elizabeth died in 1873, the year the last daughter was born, so possibly in childbirth.
David remarried in 1875 to Juliana Groff, and they raised three sons. At the time of writing of the biography found in the Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, none of the three sons were married. The two older boys lived at home on the farm; the youngest had attended the State Normal school in Millersvile and was teaching school.
It may be expected that Elizabeth and Juliana Groff were related, possibly sisters or cousins. It would have been Juliana who was living and apparently present when the information for the Biographical Annals was taken. She names Elizabeth's parents as Jacob & Mary Groff of Paradise Township. She says that she is a descendant of Hans Graf, the first of the Groff family to settle in this country. She doesn't name her parents, possibly because they had already been noted, but goes into more detail about the Groff ancestry. This would seem to imply that she too was a daughter of Jacob & Mary Groff.
David farmed ninety acres and became well-off and well respected. He served as school director of the township for some years.

1 | Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, pg. 447, biography of David W. Ranck, his ancestors & descendants. Mention is made of his parents John Ranck (b. 1811) & Elizabeth Weidman; his grandfather John Ranck; great-grandfather Andrew Ranck; and great-great-grandfather the immigrant in 1740 Philip Ranck, of German & Swiss parentage, who took the oath of allegiance to King George in 1760. As this Ranck family immigrated in 1740, about13 years after Margaretha Ranck Snader, to Lancaster Co. PA, to Earl Twp.,it is likely that they are related in some way to our Ranck family. |
