The Andrew L. Thomas family had a two story house on Thomas Road, (accessed by Zora Road). Eventually a cottage was built in front of it. The Thomas cottage was in North Carolina but right on the state line. It still stands, but is renovated. The last three children were born in the cottage, including Nancy Grace Thomas, the youngest. When the children were grown, the two story house was torn down.
Parents Andrew Lindsey Thomas & Nancy Rebecca Ashley and some of their children are buried at nearby Flint Hill Baptist church. The circumstances regarding the will of Andrew L. Thomas, as told by daughter Nancy Grace Thomas King, were as follows. Her father's first will left land to the sons, and money to the daughters. His second will divided the property among all the children. However, his wife tore up the second will, so the daughters were to received only money. Son Charley inherited the house, were he and his mother lived thereafter. Charley was also made executor of the will, and as Nancy Grace Thomas was a minor, her share of the money was held in trust by him. She never received her money, which was retained by her brother Charley. Nor was a marker placed on the mother's grave.

Thomas family

The Thomas famiy, with Nancy Grace Thomas as an infant, being held, at left. Other members unidentified.

Family of Andrew L. Thomas & Rebecca Lindsey, about 1896-97. Nancy Grade Thomas is in back row, holding her mother's hand.

Notice that in this photo, there are four couples on the porch besides parents Andrew L. and Nancy Rebecca Thomas. There are also the youngest daughter and oldest unmarried daughter just to right of the parents. Judging by the groupings of parents with infants still in long dresses, it appears that all five daughters, and oldest living son Joseph L. are on the porch, with spouses if married. Younger sons and some grandchildren are on the steps. One couple, besides holding an infant, also holds a toddler son. Another couple at left holds only an infant, but the young girls in front of them may be theirs also. Best guess, (with ages in 1897) as follows:
On porch L to R: Laura Thomas(27yr) & husband Robert McKee holding Elsie McKee (1 y)/; Andrew L & Nancy R. Thomas; Nancy Grace Thomas (5y); Sallie E. Thomas (18y); Joseph L. Thomas (20y) with son Carlyle (2y) & wife Eula Hoover with daughter Mary (~9 mos); Sam Blankenship, wife Synthia Thomas(24y) with son Thomas (~2y); Walter Hoover & wife Hixie Thomas(23y), married in 1895, no children yet.
On the steps L to R: Moody Thomas (10); Leila (7y), Eula (5y) & Shelly (9y) McKee; possibly Claude Blankenship (5y), & unidentified boy; Charley Thomas (13y). Unaccounted for would be Annie McKee (3y). Claude Blankenship (5y) hardly seems old enough to be one of the two young boys center front, so may also be unaccounted for. This attempted identification is based solely on the photo and ages. Photo is unlabeled. EWW.
