1 1860 United States Federal Census, Brady Township, Butler County, PA, Page 14, lines 25-32 lists Richard Hines, 70, married to Elizabeth Hines, 70, living at the house of their son, Thomas Hines, 38. Also present are five additional children: son George Hines, 35; son Elij. Hines, 33; son Edward Hines, 18; son Richard Hines, 19; and daughter Mary Hines, 21. Thomas is a farmer, George, Elijah, Edward, and the younger Richard are all farm laborers. Everyone was born in PA except for the elder Richard, who was born in Ireland. This census is dated 8 Jun 1860.

2 1870 United States Federal Census, Brady Township, Butler County, PA, Page 10, lines 6-11 lists Richard Hinez, 82, married to Elizabeth Hinez, 74, living at the house of their son, George Hines, 43. Also present are three additional children: son Richard Hinez, 30; daughter Mary Hinez, 25[28?]; and son Eli Hinez, 42. George and Richard are farmers, Eli is a common laborer. The elder Richard Hinez's occupation is listed as "infirm." Everyone was born in PA except the elder Richard, who was born in Ireland--his parents are also listed as being of foreign birth. George, Richard, and Eli are listed as having a father of foreign birth, Mary and Elizabeth are not. This census is dated 19 Aug 1870.

3 Book: History of Butler County Pennsylvania 1895, page 1244 indicates that Richard Hines came to America in 1800 with his wife and five of his children: Richard, George, Eleanor, Betty, and Jane. He left two children behind in Ireland: Alexander and Susan. Richard Jr. settled in Brady Twp. and married Betsy Brandon. Two of his children were named Eli and Mrs. Mary Gibson.
4 Index to the Compiled Military Service Records for the Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812, National Archives and Records Administration, lists Richard Hines as a soldier with the 138th Regiment (Miller's) Pennsylvania Militia. He was inducted at the rank of Private and discharged with the same rank.
5 20th Century History of Butler & Butler County PA1909, by James McKee, pp. 861-862, biographical sketch of George W. Hines, gives his grandparents Richard Hines (born Ireland, veteran of Rev. War, received 500 acres in Brady Twp.) and Elizabeth Brandon; George W. Hines' parents William Hines and Margaret Robison, dau. of James Robison. Lists ten children of Wm. & Margaret. (Complete text)

He was a grandson of Richard Hines (Jr.), who was born in County Down, Ireland, and came to Butler County when eighteen years of age.
