Andrew Stoughton was the third child of his parents, John and Catherine Covert Stoughton. Andrew was born in 1802 or 1803, so possibly the year his parents arrived in Butler County PA from the Lewisburg area of Northampton (now Union) Co. Andrew was the third of nine children, and among the five boys, he was the middle brother. In 1825, when Andrew was 23 yrs. old, he married Mary Glenn, and they raised a family of nine children, four boys and five girls. The children married into the families of Campbell, Davis, McCandless and Hockenberry. Andrew lived through the years of the Civil War, and died a year after it ended. He wrote his will in early December of 1866, and died one month later, January 1867. He was sixty-five years old.

Source Notes

  • No census data was found for 1810, 1820, or 1830 census.
  • [6] Relationship of William Stoughton: In 1860 census, relationships are not given. It is unclear whether William is a son or possibly a grandson or nephew. His birth in ~1851 seems late for this family.
  • [18] Church locations: Mt. Zion Baptist Church's present day location is in Franklin Twp. The location of original Muddy Creek Baptist Church not known to this researcher, but the present day church is on the border of Clay & Brady townships. If Andrew Stoughton donated land for the church, it may have been in Clay Twp., where it appears his land lay.
  • [16] Andrew Stoughton obituary: The Andrew Stoughton of this obituary would have been born about 8 July 1813. Only two adult Andrew Stoughtons are found in the 1850 & 1860 census (by ancestry.com search engine): Andrew Stoughton born 1802, and his nephew Andrew J. Stoughton born 1825. (A third Andrew Stoughton, age 8 yrs, appears in the 1860 census.) Andrew J. Stoughton lived until 1902, so one would conclude that the obituary must pertain to Andrew Stoughton born about 1802. This 1802 birth year is calculated from his age as in the 1850 & 1860 census. If it is correct, and if he died in Dec. 1866, his age would have been about 64 years. It is possible the obituary miss-stated his age in years as 53 rather than, say, 63 years. If so, and if the rest of the age is correct (the 5 months & 20 days), then his birth date would be something like 8 July 1803.

Research Notes

  • Burial site research re. Andrew Stoughton & wife Mary, with negative results: No gravestones found at various Butler County cemeteries visited in 2006-2007 by E. Wilson Williams (Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, Wolf Creek Cemetery, Muddy Creek Cemetery, Prospect's Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Prospect Presbyterian Cemetery or West Liberty Cemetery). No record found in the entire 5 volume set of the Cemetery Inventory of Butler County, searched by research staff of the Butler Area Public Library, Oct. 2007.
This suggests burial without gravestones, or that their stones deteriorated beyond legibility by the time of the Inventory; or burial at a small private cemetery not included in the Inventory.
  • There is some uncertainty about the name of Andrew Stoughton's wife. See the research notes section on the Mary Glenn page.
