Notes on history of Hanover
The Electors of Hanover in 1714 became also the royal family of the United Kingdon (Great Britain), and shared rulers until the reign of Queen Victoria began in 1837. Descent in Hanover required inheritance of the crown by a male ruler. The Seven Years War (1756-1763) saw a battle fought near the city. In 1803 on Napoleon's orders, 30,000 French soldiers occupied Hanover for a time before transfer to Great Britain. In 1815 the Congress of Vienna elevated the electorate of Hanover to the kingdom of Hanover, after which time the capital town expanded across the river and grew in size. Hanover was then ruled by Ernest Augustus, brother of Great Britain's William IV, and remained a kingdom until 1866. In that year it was annexed by Prussia during the Franco Prussian War. Hanover defeated Prussia at the battle of Langensalza; nevertheless Hanover was annexed by Prussia as a provincial capital. Hanoverians continued their opposition to Prussia.

Notes on the Fillgrove family
The Fillgrove family was from Hanover,Germany, leaving Hanover four years after annexation by Prussia. The name appears in older church records in Pennsylvania as Pfuhlgraff & variants.
The 1880 census lists William Fillgrove as born in Hanover. He indicates his parents were also born in Hanover, a city on the Leine River in Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). As they were farmers it is likely they were from the area around Hanover rather than from the city itself. William's son Louis would have been about ten years old at time of immigration, given as 1870 in the census of 1900. As he and his sister Mena both appear in the (August) 1870 census in Clarion Co. PA, but residing with another family also from Hanover, and as his parents William & Emilia have not yet been located in that census, it is possible but not certain that these two children immigrated ahead of their parents.

Source Notes

  • William & Amilia Fillgrove have not been not found in the 1870 census. Two children, Louis and Mena, are living with a different family, also immigrants from Hanover. It is possible that the parents came later, or that the children were boarding and working on the Bisenhouse farm. A child (Marey) born to William and Amilia Fillgrove in 1871 was born in Pennsylvania, so it is likely that William and Amalia did immigrate in 1870-1871.
