NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Levi F. Beals is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Home of Jacob & Elizabeth Beals, later of son Levi Beals & wife Sara Kribbs. Left to right: Levi (in doorway), Will, Cora, Sara.
Sade Kribbs Beals' pitcher

There is a family story that Levi and wife Sara "Sade" Kribbs moved into the Jacob Beals home to take care of Levi's parents. They built the side addition as an apartment for the parents, and then at Sade's request, changed the orientation of the house. In the photo can be seen a front porch facing one way, and another smaller entry facing the opposite direction. (This is the only photo in our possession of Levi Beals & family).
Wife Sade was said to have had a temper, and one day in an argument with someone, threw her pitcher at them as they went out the door.
Eventually it was decided that the parents, Jake and Elizabeth Beals, should go to live with their daughter, Ann Biery, . It was said the parents did not live long after the move, so perhaps it was about 1889-1890. Jake died in Oct. 1890, and Elizabeth in 1899.

1877 Caldwell, Richland Twp Jacob & Wm Beals farms.jpg

From the 1877 Caldwell Atlas, a portion of Richland Twp. showing the farms of Jacob Beals and his son William Beals.
The farm of Jacob's son Benjamin and that of daughter Flora Ann Beals & her husband Nathan Biery are just to the north in Salem Twp.
Levi Beals inherited the Jacob Beals homestead. Levi married Sara Kribbs in 1872, and may have taken over the operation of the farm at that point, although the farm is still designated as belonging to J. Beals on the 1877 map. It is known that Levi's parents lived with them for a time, then moved to the nearby home of Flora and Nathan Biery.

The mother, who bore the maiden name of Elizabeth Bry, was born in Lehigh county, and was a daughter of Michael Bry. In 1839 the parents took up their residence in Venango county, where the father died at the age of eighty-three years, but the mother is still living at the advanced age of ninety. Source Notes

  • Regarding the lack of an 1860 census record: I have manually reviewed all census entries for Richland, Beaver, Salem, Elk, and Licking Townships, Clarion County, PA, along with Richland Township, Venango County, PA. No sign of the Jacob Beals family was found. The census for Richland Twp. Clarion Co. contains only one Beals residence, that of William Beals [son of Jacob] and his wife Susana. In Beaver Twp., we find another son, Jacob Beals, Jr. and his wife Clara. In Salem Twp., we find a third son, Samuel Beal and his family, as well as Daniel Beals and his wife Elizabeth. No Beals (or variants) in Elk & Licking Twps.. Richland Twp, Venango Co., has a David Beels w/ wife Margaret, as well as an Elizabeth Beels (37) working as a "domestic" in the home of a Mr. Coutter.
The fact that Jacob's sons are all still in the area, and that there is also no sign of Jacob's wife or other children (especially James Francis Beals) in 1860, we surmise that their home was simply left out of the census for one reason or another.
  • Although buried at Salem Lutheran, it appears that Levi and Sarah Beals and family attended St. Petersburg Lutheran for a time. They appear with the two daughters in the St. Petersburg church records. Also, although son George Frederick Beals is buried at Zion Union in Venango Co., his daughter Lucille & family are buried at St. Petersburg.
