1865 Pomeroy, Salem T, Beals Biery farms .jpg

From the 1865 Pomeroy map of Clarion County, segment of Salem Twp. just north of the border with Richland Twp. shows the farms of Jacob Beals, Nathan Biery (husband of Flora Ann Beals), and Benjamin Beals. This map indicates that the Jacob Beals farm lay in Salem Twp., rather than Richland. In fact portions of it lay in both townships.|200px|left]]

The 1877 Caldwell Atlas map of Salem Twp. still shows the Biery farm, although that of Benjamin Beals is no longer indicated. The Jacob Beals farm was shown in Richland Twp. in 1877.

5 1880 United States Federal Census, District 81, Salem Twp, Clarion Co, PA, page 14. Census dated 1 June 1880. Lines 27-29: Nathan S. Beary, 62, farmer, b. PA, parents b. PA; Flora A., 51, housewife, b. PA, parents b. PA; Cathron, 8, child, at home, b. Germany, parents b. Germany. Cathron can not write.
Note: for the child Cathron age 8, the surname Beary is implied; her status as "child" is at variance with the usual status of "son" or "daughter" for children of the head of household. If she were adopted the census taker may therefore have used a different designation. Otherwise, if she were actually related, the generational age difference suggests she might be the child of a cousin of Nathan's.

Source Notes

  • No primary source has been found for Flora Ann Beals' birth in Lehigh County. However, her mother and two of her siblings are listed as born there in county history biographies, and in Samuel Beals' marriage record. The family is stated to have come west to Venango County in 1839, which would be some ten years after Flora's birth. See Jacob Beals' page.
  • In the 1900 census, a Henry Beary is in Knox, Twp, Clarion Co with a birthplace in Germany, Perhaps there is a connection between the Cathron in the 1880 census and this Henry. There is no indication in the 1900 census for either Flora or NAthan Biery/Beary.
