(In 1840, Casper would have been about age 55; the other male, marked age 15-20, could be son William who would have been about age 13, depending on month of census.

Pgs. 25 & 26: In the two dwellings just prior to Jane McCandless, widow, and the household of her son John M. McCandless, are the households of Joseph Hockenberry and William Hockenberry. Joseph Hockenberry is age 64, married to Elizabeth. William Hockenberry is age 33, married to Delilah.
Joseph Hockenberry is an uncle of Jane "Jennie" McCandless, who in this 1850 census appears as the widow of "Swamp" James McCandless. Joseph Hockenberry is the brother of her mother, Jane Hockenberry. William Hockenberry may be a cousin of Jane "Jennie" McCandless, a son of her uncle Casper Hockenberry.

Pg. 1246 Casper Hockenberry, Sr., second son of John and Hannah Hockenberry, born in Perry county in 1785, came with his parents to Butler county, about 1810 located on Muddy creek, in Worth Twp.; 200 acres; died Oct. 29, 1860. Married Margaret Shaffer; lists 8 children: Annie who married Jonathan Wimer; Joseph, a resident of Butler; Catherine, wife of J. J. Baker; Hannah, deceased wife of William Gallagher; Effie, wife of Joseph Forrester; Mahala, wife of Sheplar Boston; William, who died recently in Worth township, and Mary, wife of Elijah Rolls.


Pg. 1246 Joseph Hockenberry, eldest son of Casper & Margaret Hockenberry was born Jan 16, 1814...His first wife was Eliza Kennedy, a dau. of David Kennedy. She died in 1878 leaving 6 children (named); His second wife was Mrs. mary J. Lepely who died in 1883. See full text.

He died in the neighborhood where he first settled, in the ninety-ninth year of his age. Names of his children: John, Caspar, Joseph, Jonathan, Betsey (Buchanan), Jane (McCandless), Anna (Woolum), and Ellen Graham. Caspar married Margaret Shaffer. He died in Worth Township. Six of his children are living in this county."

Mary Jane wife of Jos. Hockenberry died Nov. 14, 1883 in the 50th year of her age.

    Mr. Copper notes that William Hockenberry is the son of Casper and Margaret Shaffer Hockenberry, and that the Butler Co. History places his death in 1893. Also that Mary Fisher Hockenberry is the daughter of Mr/Mrs Jacob Fisher, and the wife of William Hockenberry.
