entry #18 from top: Family headed by Samuel Church: 3 males <5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 30-40, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 70-80. Samuel is 74 and Elizabeth 70 in 1840. This is Samuel Church living with his wife and two families of his children and grandchildren. Erastus Church is 32 and Caroline Church 8 and the four oldest sons of Erastus and Lucy are 7, 5, 3, and 1 in 1840. These all agree with persons in the above list. Lucy Whitten should be 32 also and this is not in agreement.

3 1860 United States Federal Census, Clark County, York, IL, Page 19 lines 25-28, lists Jefferson S. Murphy, 27, living with Caroline Murphy, 28, Marrion Murphy, 3, and Erastus W. Murphy, 5 months. Jefferson is a Blacksmith. Jefferson was born in Virginia, Caroline in Vermont, Marrion in Indiana, and Erastus in Illinois.

4 1870 United States Federal Census, Vigo County, Sugar Creek, IN, Page 22 lines 1-10, lists Erastus Church, 62, living with Lucy Church, 57, Geo Church, 24, Lucy A. Church, 22, Orange Church, 20, Caroline Murphy, 38, Marion Murphy, 13, Willie Murphy, 10, Oscar Church, 30, and Martha Church, 22. Oscar and Martha are listed as being a separate family but living in the same dwelling; they were married the previous November. Geo, Lucy A., Orange, Marion, and Oscar were born in Indiana. Erastus, Lucy, and Caroline were born in Vermont. Willie was born in Illinois. No one had parents of foreign birth. Marion and Willie were in school. Everyone is either a farmer or a house keeper, except for Caroline who is a seamstress.

5 1880 United States Federal Census, Vigo County, Sugar Creek, IN, Supervisor's District 4, Enumeration District 200, Page 8 lines 35-37, lists J. P. Hubbard, 65, living with his wife Caroline R., 47, and her son Erastus W. Murphy, 20. Erastus is listed as the "Son" directly below Caroline, but has a separate family number, suggesting that he is Caroline's son but not J.P. Hubbard's son. J.P. and Erastus are farmers, Caroline is a housekeeper. J.P. was born in New Hampshire, his father in Massachusetts, and his mother in New Hampshire. Caroline was born in Vermont, her father in Vermont, mother in New Hampshire. Erastus was born in Illinois, his father in Virginia, his mother in Vermont. Erastus is listed as suffering from "Spinal Fever."

Murphy of Darwin, IL, enlisting on 21 Jun 1861 as a Private to serve the state of Illinois in the Civil War. He is listed as having been a POW and not having survived the war. He Enlisted in Company H, Illinois 21st Infantry Regiment on 28 Jun 1861. Mustered out on 16 Nov 1863 at Richmond, VA.

It lists the names of his dependents as "Widow: Murphy, Caroline R." and "Minor: Hubbard, Caroline R. (Gdn.)." His service is listed as "H, 21 Ill. Inf." [Company H, Illinois 21st Infantry Regiment]. The date of filing for the widow is listed as 13 May 1864, application #51654 and certificate #70623. For the minor, the date of filing is listed as 30 July 1875, application #219446 and certificate #169841.
