5 Hiram Beals biography Hiram Beals, an honored veteran of the Civil war and a leading citizen of Richland township, Clarion county, was born July 31, 1840, in Venango county, Penn., and is a son of Jacob Beals, a native of Berks county, of German descent. The mother, who bore the maiden name of Elizabeth Bry, was born in Lehigh county, and was a daughter of Michael Bry. In 1839 the parents took up their residence in Venango county, where the father died at the age of eighty-three years, but the mother is still living at the advanced age of ninety. He was a famer by occupation, a Democrat in politics and a Lutheran in religious belief. The mother is also a consistent member of the Church. Their family numbered eight children, namely: Flora Anna; Samuel; Benjamin; Jacob;, who was a Union soldier during the Rebellion; William; Hiram; Levi; and James. (See complete article). 7 Cemetery Association Record from Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association lists Jacob Beals, 1806-1899, as married to Elizabeth Brey, 1808-1899. It lists their descendants down as far as four generations in some places. Some of those descendants are my anscestors, including son James Beals, daughter-in-law Olive Bower, grandson Elgie Beals and grandaughter-in-law Winnie Kline.

Source Notes

  • The 1870 census erroneously lists Oliver C. Bower, male, for Olive Samantha Bower, female (step daughter).
  • The Clarion County Cemeteries transcription project of 1986, available through the Clarion County Historical Society shows a gravestone at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Beaver City, transcribed as "Beals, Isaac, Son of S. & C. Beals." It notes that the grave is near that of Catherine Beals. This child is not noted in any other source that we are aware of. In two trips to this cemetery by E. W. Williams (1991 when stones were less weathered, & 2006 after much undergrowth was cleared away), transcriptions were made of a small stone that reads "Infant son of J & C Beals, died May 21 1860 aged 5 days." This is believed to be a child of Jacob Beals, Jr. and wife Clara. It is wondered if the previous transcriber ( possibly a Girl Scout project for the Historical Society) mistook "Infant Son" for "Isaac Son". The "J" & "C" are faint, easily misread, and the date could be 1850 or 1860. Neither of these dates works well for a child of Samuel & Catherine; they weren't married until 1852, and they had another child born in 1860.
  • Margaret Kahle, Emlenton PA, notes a second gravestone transcription from Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Beaver City, as " Mary A. Beals died 17 Feb. 1865, age 4 yr., 10 mo., 27 da." , and lists her as a child of Jacob & Clara Beals. However, her birth date calculates to be about 21 March 1860. If this child, and the infant son listed above, are both children of Jacob & Clara Beals, they had to be twins, with the son's birth month being miss-transcribed as May rather than Mar. (The source of Margaret Kahle's notes (ie. when transcribed or by whom)is unknown).
  • Information on Mary A. Beals, daughter of Jacob & Clara, from research & transcription of Margaret Kahle, Emlenton, PA; forwarded by Duane Beals 2007. Margaret Kahle transcribes the gravestone for the infant son of Jacob & Clara Beals as "Infant son of J. & C. Beals died May 2, 1850 age 5 days", rather than May 12, 1850.
