Dimitris Vergetakis and wife Maria farmed in the village of Krousonas, which is about 25 miles south of Iraklion, Crete. They had seven children: three sons (Giannis, Michalis, Giorgios) and four daughters ( Athina, Katerina, Kristali, Kyrgiakoula). The youngest son, Giorgios, born 1900 in Krousonas, immigrated in 1916 to New York and thence to western Pennsylvania, becoming a small business owner.
