"The Magee Family, History of the Family in America, Revised and Enlarged", by Robert Ashley Stevenson, Johnson Publ. Co., Boulder CO. (631 pgs); "The Hogue Family" on pgs. 521-588.

Several Hogue generations in Scotland:

  • Sir John Hogue ("coming from an unbroken line of 14 generations", cites source "The Baylis Family of Virginia" by Willetta & Wm. Blum, but does not name the 14 generations
  • his son George Hogue,
  • George's son Sir James Hogue,
    In America:
  • James' son, the immigrant, William Hogue b. 1660 in Musselburgh, Scotland, d. 1745 Kernstown VA., married 1695 to Barbara Hume (b. 1670 in Paisley, Scotland.) William Hogue buried Opequon Cemetery.
Cites source "Colonial Families of America", Vol. 4, p. 209. William Hogue left Scotland in 1680.
Cites source "History of Shenandoah Valley" by J. E. Norris, p. 565 : Among fellow immigrants were a Hume family who died at sea, leaving orphan daughter Barbara Hume, whom William Hogue later married.
William Hogue and family all move to Virginia, except oldest son John Hogue.
  • John Hogue & wife Gwendolyn Bowen-Davis, remained in Lancaster Co. PA. This family is of interest to us because gr-gr-grandson resided in Worth Twp., Butler Co., at Jacksville, and buried at West Liberty Cemetery. West Liberty village was surveyed by our ancestor James Irvin Hogue who resided in the area of Jacksville.

The direct line of descent from John Hogue & Gwendolyn Bowen-Davis are:
  • Rev. John Hogue m. Elizabeth Lennox (resided Pa & Va)
  • Ebenezer Hogue (b. ~1765) m. Leah Bennett (res. Slippery Rock Twp., Mercer Co. PA
  • William Hogue (b. 1797) m. Martha Taylor (res. Slippery Rock Twp., Lawrence Co. PA
  • William Hogue (b. 1833) m. Mary Stickel (res. Jacksville, Worth Twp, Butler Co. PA; buried West Liberty).

Note that William Hogue (b. 1797) is of the generation of our James Irvin Hogue (b. 1796).

In the Magee Family History, John Hogue & Gwendolyn Bowen-Davis, (resided in Lancaster Co. PA) had 2 sons* of interest:
  • His 1st child was Rev. John Hogue m. Elizabeth Lennox. (this line traced above to Butler County PA)
  • His 12th child was James Hogue, m. Rachel Elder, resided Brady Twp., Butler Co. PA. Cites source: the 1833 History of Butler Co., pg. 363. However, that is the biographical sketch of our James Irvin Hogue. We believe the Magee text authors to be possibly in error linking this biography to their James Hogue. The wives names differ, and Magee text seems to have no information on James beyond this biography. It may be instructive to note that only the first 3 children of Rev. John Hogue are traced through further generations. Nothing beyond their name seems to be known about the last nine children, including James. Also, there are no sources listed for the bulk of material in the text of the Magee History; thus the inclusion of this source seems to imply that this is their only basis for making this link, and they are unsure of it.
The fact that both Hogue family lines (our James Irvin Hogue and McGee's William Hogue b. 1833) eventually reside in Jacksville, Worth Twp., Butler Co. PA strongly suggests the two Hogue lines are related. The connection has not been found; many website trees duplicate one family or the other, and some list both but do not seem to connect them.

We note that we have only seen pages re. the Hogue family; it is possible that the entire Magee text may end with a source listing that we are unaware of.
