Source Notes

  • The obituary of Caroline Snyder lists the marriage date of her and David Bower as 1857. The marriage certificate lists 1852, and children were born in 1853 and 1856. We assume the obituary to be in error.
  • Carolyn Snyder Bower obituary notes a daughter Jane Tyler of Oil City. 1900 & 1910 census for Venango Co., Oil City, show Laura V. and James C. or James O. Tyler. Jane Tyler or Emma Tyler or Emma Jane Tyler has not been found in the census.
  • The grave of Caroline Snyder is noted as "exhumed" in the records of the Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association. No further explaination is given beyond that notation. Nancy Beals Walls did some searching for any other gravesite for a Caroline Snyder Bower but nothing has been found to date. Caroline Snyder's parents are also buried at Salem Lutheran, so the body was not for example moved to the plot of her parents in a different cemetery. The action may have been temporary for some oversight reason, for example moving her from her parent's plot at Salem Lutheran to her husband's.
She cannot be located in the 1870 - 1900 census for Clarion Co. (by ancestry.com search engine). Possibly she remarried, was initially buried with her second husband, them exhumed (by the children?)& moved to Salem Lutheran Cemetery, to the plot of her first husband. The Cemetery Association Records do not indicate whether the body was moved to or from Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Research

  • 1870 - 1900 PA census, Clarion Co., searched via ancestry.com search engine by E. B. Williams; no record for Caroline Snyder found. Page-by-page search done for Salem Twp in 1870 census with no success. Brother Harmon S. Snyder is living on the family farm. Other townships and years not searched by page.
  • Gravestone at Salem Lutheran Cemetery, transcribed Mar. 1995 by Elizabeth Wilson Williams: "Christopher Snyder, Jan 21, 1819 - Jan 26 1899; Sarah His Wife, May 22, 1825 - Aug 19, 1902, Gone Home, SNYDER". This Christopher Snyder is of an age to be a sibling of our Caroline Snyder (Bower), who is also buried at Salem Lutheran.
