Anna Catharina Becker was married first in 1775 to Nicolaus "Claus" Bernburg. It is not known whether there were children to this marriage. Ten years later in 1785, as a widow, she married again, this time to Jakob Speck. Jacob Speck was apparently engaged in military service at the time. In the church records of Hitzerode he is noted as a "dragon,1785". The term "dragon" refers to a short musket, attached by a swivel to the belt and ornamented by the representation of a dragon's head at the muzzle. A soldier armed with such a musket was called a dragoon. Anna Catharina's birth and death records were not found, but it is expected that she lived her life, after her first marriage at least, in Hitzerode. Daughter Anna Margarethe Speck was born there in November of 1785, so is probably the first child of Jakob Speck and Anna Catharina Becker. Her father was Johannes Becker. At the birth of her daughter Anna Margarethe Speck, the godmother was "Margarethe, widow of Johannes Becker". It is therefore presumed that Anna Catharina Becker 's mother's name was Margarethe, and that her father died before this baptism took place in November 1785.

Source notes

At the 1785 baptism of Anna Margarethe Speck , her godmother (sponsor) was "Margarethe, widow of Johannes Becker". Since Anna Margarethe Speck's grandfather is Johannes Becker, it is likely that his wife's name was Margarethe, and that Johannes died before 1785. Apparently, direct church records to confirm this relationship were not found, beyond this baptismal record.
