Immigrant from Ireland ~1794

NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

John Boyle is not in my direct ancestry. His daughter Nancy was the spouse of John Stoughton (1805), who is 1 step removed in the following ways:

The surname Boyle (or Boyles) is of Scottish origin. The Boyle family's penchant for higher education may reflect this origin. Our records of them begin in Ireland before the immigration to America. Patriarch Alexander Boyle resided in County Down, in the Ballney Hinch area, where he was a farmer and a miller, and in religion a strict Seceder. He was the father of seven children, (including John, Thomas, Nancy, Elizabeth, & Francis). He is buried in the cemetery there at Ballney Hinch. His wife is thought to be Charity Armstrong, who was said to make religious pilgrimages to Germany. She survived her husband and accompanied her children to America.
Francis Boyle was born in Ballney Hinch, Ireland, grew up there and married Ann Scott. He received a good education, was a teacher and leader in sports. He and Ann had 6 children, all born in Ireland: three sons (John, David, Alexander) and three daughters (names unknown). Francis' son Alexander is said to have been born in Co. Londonderry; possibly Francis went there to receive his education and remained for a time. In 1794, while the children were small, Francis & family left Ireland for America. They settled at Glade Mills, Butler Co. PA. His brothers and mother also immigrated. Some of the Boyle family may have been in Bedford Co. PA before moving westward (per Magrath). They were all for a time in Butler Co. PA. Eventually it appears that, except for William who died young, and Francis who remained in Butler Co. PA, all the sons of Alexander Boyle settled in Ogle Co. Illinois, in Dement Twp. & Rochelle. Their mother, Charity Armstrong Boyles, remained with Francis in Butler Co. until her death at age 102 years.

  • Boyle family originated in Scotland; migrated to Northern Ireland at time of religious persecutions. Resided near Ballyney Hinch, Co. Down, Ireland. "The family was noted for their erudition, a number of the men being school teachers" and others following various professions.
  • Alexander Boyle, farmer & miller near Ballyney Hinch, Co. Down Ireland; buried in the graveyard there. A strict Seceder. Of seven children, we know the names of John, Thomas, Nancy, Elizabeth,& Francis.
  • Francis Boyle, son of Alexander, born at Ballyney Hinch, received excellent education; was a school teacher and leader of athletic sports. He married in Ireland to Ann Scott. All his children were born in Ireland; while they were small, about 1794, Francis & his family emigrated to America & purchased a farm at Glade Mills, Butler Co. PA. Their children were: John, David, Alexander, & 3 daughters.
  • John Boyle ("best educated man in Butler Co."); owned farm in Worth Twp; teacher & surveyor; Democrat, Seceder; married Martha Boyd & had children: John who died in Bennington KS, Nancy who married John Stoughton & 2nd Jonathan Vogan, Jennie who married William Stewart of Worth Twp, Martha married 1st James Atwell & 2nd Samuel Irwin, and Thomas.
  • Thomas Boyle, son of John Boyle & Martha Boyd, born Worth Twp, Butler Co. PA 15 Dec. 1815, died 9 June 1865. Age 11 when his mother died. Apprenticed to a blacksmith, he was a natural mechanic/machinist. Had shop in Jacksville; died at Bovard. He married Jane Stougthon b. Worth Twp. 6 Dec 1822, d. 19 June 1889, daughter of John Stoughton & Catherine Covert, both b. in PA.
7 Wedding Notice, Butler Centinel, 4 Sept 1821, "Married on Thursday the 30th ult. (i.e. Aug 30, 1821) by the Rev. Isaiah Niblock, Mr. John Boyle of this county, to Miss Sarah Pollock of Washington County."
Note: The identity of this couple has not been conclusively established; it is certain that our John Boyle's 2nd wife's given name was Sarah, from his will.
Per Jim Voltz: Most of the other Boyle families in Butler Co. were Catholic; Rev. Isaiah Niblock was, I believe, a Presbyterian minister; definitely not Catholic. This marriage announcement almost has to be my John Boyle. No other non-Catholic John Boyle has been found in Butler Co. until much later in the county's history. Please see Source Notes re. the date.
John Boyle & 2nd wife Sarah also had a son named David (listed as under age 5 yrs, 1830 census; listed in the will of John Boyle). Given the names, date, and non-Catholic religion of the wedding notice, the chances are high that this is the correct Sarah."

Source notes re. John Boyle

  • Birthplace of John Boyle: per Jordan, all children of Francis Boyle were born in Ireland. The family starting with Alexander, father of Francis, resided at Ballney Hinch in Co. Down, & Francis was born there, so this could be where his son John was born. Per Stephanie Boyle-Berrier, John's brother Alexander (II) was born in Co. Londonderry, Ireland. It isn't known how long the family was in Co. Londonderry, or if they were then possibly in the process of transit to America.
  • Re. Marriage announcement for John Boyle & Sarrah Pollock. Per Jim Voltz: The 1821 date does not correlate with the statement in John Jordan's history of western PA, Vol. 3, that first wife Martha Boyd died when her son Thomas was 11 years old. (Per Jordan, Thomas was born in 1813, so implication is that Martha died in 1824.) However, the 1820 census, Middlesex Twp. for John Boyle has no older woman listed in the household. This would tend to support the 1821 marriage date and call into question the 1824 date in Jordan's history. The Jordan history also says that Thomas was born in Jacksville, Worth Twp., Butler Co.; but the 1820 census has them in Middlesex Twp.
Per Voltz: The oldest child of John & Martha was born about 1810, so the marriage to Martha Boyd probably occurred around 1810. The statement by Jordan that Thomas was age 11 at Martha's death, would conform if Martha died in 1821 and John remarried the same year. (We have that Nancy Boyle was the oldest child, born about 1807-08 per the census of 1850-1880. This would not affect the above argument re. the age of John Jr. when his mother died, etc.)
  • The 1810 census for John Boyle hasn't been found. It would be about the time of John's first marriage (to Martha Boyd). Per Jim Voltz: John Boyle's father, Francis Boyle, & John's brothers are present in Middlesex Twp. As John was said to be educated, it is possible he went elsewhere for advanced schooling. A book on the history of Beaver Co. PA lists a young John Boyle as a school teacher in 1800. John was known to teach school. This may be relevant to the fact that Robert Boyd was a resident of Beaver County around the same time. In later census data, Robert Boyd's descendents and the Boyle's always lived really near each other, and attended the same Wolf Creek Church.

  • 1870 Census Worth Twp., Butler Co. PA (Per Jim Voltz: Name should be Boyle, not Boyd): John Boyd age 61, wagon maker, wife Jane age 57; children Lizabeth age 34, Mary age 20, Laura age 15, Ross age 12 (Must be Wm. Ross Boyle.)
  • 1880 Census Worth Twp., Butler Co. PA. John Boyle, wagon maker, age 70; wife Jane age 68; children: Elizabeth age 44, Laura M. age23; William R. age22, grandson Lee R. Boyle, age 9. (We don't know whose child this is.)

Source notes re. Alexander Boyle Descendants

Sources re. Alexander Boyle

  • Per Genealogy of Western PA by Jordan : Francis Boyle's father was Alexander Boyle. Francis' mother's name was not listed.
  • Per Jim Voltz: Expect Francis Boyle's mother was Charity Armstrong. The Cherry Valley connection described in the M'Cune Genealogical Record (Source #A3) is strong evidence but not absolute proof.
  • Myrtie C. Magrath (Source # A3, The Tracy M'Cune Genealogical Record) is uncertain about the death location of Charity Armstrong Boyles, knowing only "Cherry Valley". Per Jim Voltz, the location of the Francis Boyle homestead in Middlesex Twp., Butler Co., is still called Cherry Valley. Jim's school district included Cherry Valley, and Cherry Valley Road. Ms. Magrath speculates that Cherry Valley might be in Bedford County, as that is the residence of some of the Boyles before going westward. Ms. Magrath mentions a Cherry Valley Massacre, an event that happened in Bedford/Blair County. From census data, the Boyles were actually in Frankstown, now in Blair County near Altoona. There is no Cherry Valley in that area. (There are at least four Cherry Valley locations in PA.)
When the family moved west, Charity had to stay behind in PA with someone. The Cherry Valley location of Francis Boyle is well documented, as is the fact that Alexander Boyle was Francis's father. Jim Voltz' aunt who compiled the original family history, was adamant that Charity Boyles was the wife of Alexander, Sr. Admittedly, a relative that lives to be 102 will stick in family history. There is an older woman living with Alexander Jr., recorded in the 1820 census; this may be Charity.
  • Ms. Magrath says Charity Armstrong Boyles came from Germany. Per Jim Voltz, Charity was from Ireland, but often went on religious pilgrimages to mainland Europe. Some of her children were born in Germany.
  • Ms. Magrath names the children of Charity Armstrong Boyles to be Jacob (born in Germany), Peter, David & Betsey. Per Jim Voltz, there is a possible brother of her husband, Simon Henry Boyle, who surprisingly had similar children names that were born in the same years. That Magrath is confused about the Cherry Valley issue suggests that her focus is primarily on the McCune family. She has primarily documented the Boyles only as they intermarried with McCunes. It is possible that the names she ascribes to children of Charity Armstrong Boyles are actually nephews, etc. Two of the names she lists (David, Betsey) correspond with David & Elizabeth cited in other sources. Source Jordan says Alexander had 7 children but only 5 are named by him; perhaps Jacob and Peter are the other two.
  • The fact that Ms. Magrath didn't know much about where Charity died, or with whom, suggests that her information did not extend much beyond the relatives who moved west. Some of those who went west where possibly cousins, not siblings as Ms Magrath states. The Boyle descendants who went west are quite famous in Ohio, being some of the first to settle near Athens, and are listed on the Athens website as such. Names of the children of Charity Armstrong Boyles needs research/documentation to distinguish children from nephews, etc.
  • The Genealogy of Western PA says John Boyle Jr. died in Bennington KS. This is believed to be an error. His son James died in Kansas. John, Jr.'s widow, Jane Cratty, was still living in Prospect, Butler Co. PA in 1900.

Sources re. Francis Boyle

  • Per Jim Voltz: Francis Boyle settled in Middlesex Twp., Butler Co. PA, and had 4 children - David, John, & Alexander, and Nancy.
    -David Boyle married Jane unknown;
    - John Boyle married Martha Boyd;
    - Alexander Boyle married Ruth Hopkins.
-Nancy Boyle's husband is not listed in the 1818 will of her father, Francis Boyle; she was probably unmarried at that time. Per the 1895 History of Butler Co. PA, Chap. 73 Biographical Sketches, pg. 1129: John Crowe, son of Francis Crowe, ... married 2nd to Nancy Boyles, & had a son, David B. Crowe.
This Nancy Boyles is the right age to be the daughter of Francis Boyle, & married after the 1818 will date of Francis Boyle. The son, David B., could be named for Nancy's brother, David Boyle. The "s" on her maiden name is seen also on that of the sons of Charity Armstrong (Boyles).
Per Voltz: John Crowe & Nancy Boyles lived miles from Francis Boyle's farm.

Relationship of Martha Boyle & spouse David Boyle (son of John Boyle & 2nd wife Sarah)

  • Per the 1917 obituary of David Boyle, he married "Martha Boyle, a sister of James Boyle of Rochelle in 1869".
  • Per the website of Stephanie Boyle-Berrier: siblings Martha Boyle and James Boyle were children of Ross Boyle (& grandchildren of Alexander Boyle); Martha lived in Rochelle, and married "distant relative" David Boyle.
  • Per Jim Voltz: the two Boyle's who married each other were second cousins. David (b. 1840) was the son of John Boyle Jr. (b. 1811) and Jane Cratty. (His mother's maiden name (Cratty)is provided in his brother's obituary.) John Jr. was the oldest son of John Boyle & Martha Boyd. (Line of descent: Alexander Boyle> Francis Boyle> John Boyle> John Boyle Jr.> David Boyle.) * Per Jim Voltz: David Boyle's wife, Martha Boyle, was the daughter of Ross Boyle and Margaret Garvin. Her mother's maiden name (Garvin) came from Craig Rice's research & agrees with census data. Ross Boyle was the son of Alexander Boyle and Ruth Hopkins. Ruth's maiden name(Hopkins) came from Craig Rice also; census data backs up her first name. (Line of descent: Alexander Boyle> Francis Boyle> Alexander Boyle> Ross Boyle> Martha Boyle.) Thus David and Martha were second cousins, the children of first cousins.

Conjecture

  • Jim Voltz (Contributors) has data that suggests the name of Martha Boyd's father was Robert Boyd, married to a Thornton. However, the name "Robert" is not seen again among the children of a family given heavily to name repetition. The name "Thomas", for example, is found in several generations down to present time. Martha Boyd's first son was John Boyle Jr., second son was Thomas Boyd Boyle. John Boyle Jr. had 5 sons, the first being Thomas Boyle. Nancy Boyle Stoughton's first son was Thomas Jefferson Stoughton.
Martha Boyle Atwell didn't have a son Thomas, but did name the 2nd son John Boyd Atwell. This leads to the thought that the father of Martha Boyd may possibly be a Thomas Boyd, or perhaps Thomas Jefferson Boyd (rather than Robert Boyd).

Research

  • The family of a Robert Boyd is found in proximity to the Boyd/Boyle families of Worth & Slippery Rock Twps., Butler Co. PA One Joseph Thornton mentions Robert Boyd in his will, and a daughter Martha Boyd. The wording in transcription is unclear as to whether Thornton is referring to Martha as a daughter of Robert Boyd, or Martha as his own daughter. If the former, it would suggest that Robert Boyd were the father of the Martha Boyd, wife of John Boyle, this page.
  • Thomas Boyd Boyle, born about 1813, is reported variously as being in Jacksville, Worth Twp., Butler Co. PA, or Middlesex Twp. Butler Co. PA, or Beaver Co. (a teacher). These census & etc. data are not confirmed to be regarding the same individual.
  • Descendants of a Robert Boyd of Beaver Co. live near the Boyle family in later census.
  • There is an 1800 federal census record for a Francis Boyle family in Augusta Twp, Northumberland Co, PA, page 2. Census page is not dated.
    Family headed by Francis Boyle: 1 male 0-10, 2 males 16-25, 1 female 16-25.
(Ancestry.com indexes this entry as Frances Bowls. A stamped number over the line possibly confused the indexer.) This Francis Boyle (age 16-25) is not the correct age (about 40 yrs)to be Francis, father of John Boyle.

Research Wishlist

  • Martha Boyd died at an early age, before 1820, so doesn't appear in wills. The 1810 census for John Boyle & Martha Boyd, not found, would pinpoint their location near their marriage date.
  • copy of will of Joseph Thornton (refers to a Martha Boyd, but relationship unclear in transcript).
