In the fist house there is a John King, 49, married to an Elizabeth King, 47. They live with seven children: son James M. King, 27; son Degall[?] P. King, 20; son Daniel G.[?] King, 18; daughter Lucinda King,14; daughter Hannah E. King, 12; son Andrew M. King, 9; and daughter [unknown] M. King, 6. John, James, Degall, and Daniel are farmers. Everyone was born in NC. The next house on the list belongs to George W. King, 26, an his wife Mary A. King, 23. They live with two children: son John V.[?] King, 3, and son Zacariah T.[?] King, age 3 months. George is a farmer. They were all born in NC. The next house on the list belongs to William King, 28, and his wife Elizabeth King, 26. They live with five children: son George W. King, 7; son John F. King, 5; son James W. King, 4; daughter Susan L. King, 2; and daughter Martha P. King, age one month. William is a farmer. Everyone was born in NC except for Elizabeth, who was born in TN. Elizabeth is illiterate. George and John attended school within the census year. This census is dated 1 Jun 1850. |

| 4 | Book entitled North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster, by Lewis H. Manarin[?]. Page 585, with the heading "Co. I, 37th Regiment, N.C. Troops" lists two members of the King family. George W. King was a private, residing in Mecklenburg County and enlisted in Iredell County at the age of 24 on August 15, 1862. He was present and accounted for through February, 1865. William J. King was a private, residing in Mecklenburg County and enlisted in Iredell County at the age of 22 on August 15, 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia May 1-4, 1863. He returned to duty in November or December of 1863. He was captured near Petersburg, Virginia on 2 Apr 1865, confined at Point Lookout, MD, until released on 28 Jun, 1865 afte taking the Oath of Allegiance. |
Source Notes
The 1850 census from Cherokee County has not been linked explicitly to our direct-line Kings; a lot of the names matched up so I included it here, even though Cherokee County is quite a ways away from Charlotte.
The reference to George W. King and William J. King in the NC Troops book suggests that they are either brothers or cousins. They are of the same generation and enlisted in the same place on the same day, the only two people in the regiment with the surname King. This is either our direct-line George W. King and his brother, or our direct-line William Julius A. King and his brother. The dates for George W. King given in this source (that he was 24 years old in 1862) suggest that he is not the direct-line George W. King, but instead the brother of William Julius A. King. This source should therefore be moved to the WJAK page.
