NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Sarah Hoge/Hogg is not in my direct ancestry. She is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Martha Hoge/Hogg was born 17 Dec 1759 to Robert & Letitia Hoge/Hogg, approximately seven years after they had immigrated from County Down, Ireland in 1752. Her father was born in Scotland, and it is possibly that her mother, born in Northern Ireland, was also of Scottish descent. The family located in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland Co. PA (now Juniata Co.) in the spring of 1754. Martha was born there, and grew up with two older sisters, a younger sister and brother. An older brother born in Ireland had died before she was born, and a younger brother died in infancy. Martha and her sister Mary both married members of the McKee family, also of the Tuscarora Valley community. Martha and Thomas McKee are reported to have married on 5 Sept 1778. They resided in Butler, Butler Co. PA and lived out their lives in that town.

p.2: Robert Hogg or Hoge, born Nov. 1721, a native of South Scotland, emigrated in early life to County Down, Province of Ulster, Ireland. He came to America in 1752. In the spring of 1754 he located on a tract of land in Tuscarora Valley, then in Cumberland County, Province of Pennsylvania. In June 1756, owing to the Indian incursions upon the Juniata, Mr. Hoge fled with his little family to Carlisle, returning only in the fall of that year. On two other occasions did this early pioneer seek safety in the then principal place of refuge west of the Susquehanna. He died on his plantation the 25th Jan. 1798, aged eighty years. His wife Letitia ____, born June 1724 in the north of Ireland, died March 8, 1812, in Juniata County Penn. and with her husband buried in what is now known as the "McKee graveyard." They had issue:

  • 1. William, b. 1751, in Ireland; d. 1753 in Philadelphia.
  • 2. Sarah, b. May 1753; m. first George McCullough; secondly, Hamilton Graham.
  • 3. Jenny, b. 1755; m. ___Robinson of the Juniata settlement; removed to Kentucky, and located near Maysville, where they died, S.P.; their estate was left to a son of Thomas McKee, and grandson of Mrs. Robinson's sister Martha.
  • 4. Martha, b. Dec. 1759; m. Thomas McKee.
  • 5. Mary, b. Jan. 2, 1762; m. John McKee.
  • 6. Robert, b. ___1764; d. in infancy.
  • 7. James, b. January 1766; d. ___; m. Mary Irvin.

Web Sites - Incomplete Documentation

W1 Adams Family Tree, owner AGertsch, on ancestry.com at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/233666/person/-2083836530
notes the Hogg family only in Martha Hogg, wife of Thomas McKee, and lists Robert Hogg & Letitia his wife. It however says that the Hogg parents were married in Tuscarora Valley, which we believe to be in error, as the first son was born in Ireland. It also says that Martha Hogg & Thomas McKee were married in Butler, Butler Co. Pa, which seems unlikely, as the Hogg parents remained in the Tuscarora Valley, Juniata Co. Pa and were buried there in the McKee cemetery. The site is mainly focused on the McKee side of this family, and follows the descent from Martha Hogg and Thomas McKee through one son, David Albert McKee (b. 10 Jan 1796 - d. 1 May 1847) He m. on 11 July 1816 to Mary Tweed McMillian; her parents not listed. One son listed, William McKee born 7 Oct 1825 in Slippery Rock, Butler Co. PA, died 2 Feb 1901 in Jensen, Unitah Co. Utah. He married on 22 July 1851 to Sarah Ann Hodgson (her parents not listed). Six children of this couple are listed, with their spouses: David McKee, Mary Tweed McKee, William McKee Jr., Joseph Allen McKee, Sarah Ann McKee, and Louisa Ann McKee. This generation all appear to reside in Utah. Of these six, children are listed only for William McKee Jr. (1857-1938), and Louisa Ann McKee (1866-1920).
This site lists Thomas McKee, husband of Martha Hogg, as born in Down Co. Ireland, his mother Jane Lettie McKee as born 1727 in Down Co. Ireland, but his father David McKee (1744-1865) as born in Massachusetts, U. S.

Source Notes

  • The Adams Family Tree, listed in the website sources, say that Martha Hoge & Thomas McKee were married in Butler, Butler Co. PA. No source is given for this information. It seems more likely that they were married in Tuscarora Valley where both their families were from, and then migrated west to Butler Co. PA after marriage. Martha's parents did not move westward, but are both buried in the McKee cemetery near Port Royal, Juniata Co. PA. The site also says that the earlier generation of Robert Hoge and wife Letitia unknown were married in eastern PA. We believe they married in Ireland, as the first son was born in Ireland.
