Handies Peak

John Laurino and I made a bid for Handies Peak (14,048') on May 14th, 2005. We had several difficulties which prevented us from reaching the summit. John hadn't brought crampons and one of his snowshoes broke as he tried to put it on. Furthermore, both of us neglected to bring sunscreen and our faces were charred as a result. The lack of adequate gear meant that it took a lot longer to make progress than it should have, and eventually the snow got so soft that we couldn't move effectively without two sets of working snowshoes, so we retreated only 500' short of the summit.
